WMJX vs. WPLM

Let's take a look at these 2 very similar stations. WPLM has always been thought of being softer. I mean, WMJX plays a lot of like 3 Doors Down, Lifehouse, Matchbox 20, Goo Goo Dolls, etc. And WPLM doesn't so much play that stuff. However, I've heard some stuff on WPLM that I'm not sure if it belongs there. I've heard "Walk of Life" by Dire Straits played on WPLM, and I'm not sure if that's exactly considered a soft song. And it seems that WPLM has slowly been phasing out the old love songs like from the 40s through the 60s. I wonder if WPLM will survive.

One thing that COULD happen to WPLM is that it could be sold to Nassau Broadcasting, and maybe become a translator of WCRB. Which would make sense, so that it would be heard on 99.1 and 99.5. And maybe the calls for 99.1 would be WPRB (so it would rhyme).

I remember back when WPLM was a big band station, and then for awhile, it had this variety format that competed with WBMX. Then it flipped to smooth jazz, right before WOAZ came on (which became WSJZ). It's been Easy 99.1 from then on out.

So, what do you think?
 
i still like the idea it becomes a hard rock station.....99.1 WPLM PLYMOUTH ...The Rock of Plymouth

First, I think that Princeton University already has dibs on the call-letters WPRB, the commercial student run 50,000 watt FM station on 103.3 FM. Secondly, there is no reason for yet another simulcast pair in the Boston market (a-la WAAF/WKAF et.al.). WPLM-FM is doing quite well for itself and should stay just as it is. It's one of the last of the locally owned and operated stations in the market. If someone wants classical music, just turn to 99.5 or 89.7.
 
ok, can't help it......"lost in a sea of same old radio? Land on the Rock, the Rock of Plymouth...." Ok, go ahead, give it your best what would your imagining sound like?
 
WPLM Plymouth ( insert turkey gobble sound effect here) We Play Lousy Music.
 
Should be WPLS.....We Play Long Stopsets. ::)

WPLM plays a lot of pop classics. Yer more likely to find something decent on PLM than on WMJX. I'd say the closest station to it, musically, is WJIB, which I also like.

This started in January; they've had promos with the PD claiming that they are expanding their library to include songs that will become classics, and have also added the "9-in-a-row Lite Classics" positioner.

There'd be a ton of overlap in that simulcast. While such a station would have great coverage of the North and South Shores, the combined simulcast would still have poor coverage of downtown Boston - which is probably the most important area lost by the move to 99.5. And although the owner of WPLM has claimed in the past that the station would never be sold, even if Nassau could get ahold of 99.1, there's no way that classical on 99.1 and 99.5 would be able to bill enough to make such a purchase financially viable.

One thing I've noticed about WPLM for many years is that it sounds to me like their audio processing is adjusted to give a soft, "warm and fuzzy" type of sound.

It sounds to me like the upper midrange portion of their audio (the range that may sound shrill on electric rock guitars, etc...) is somewhat de-emphasized or EQ'ed down (though the higher treble range is still there for clarity and crispness), and the lower midrange and bass may be somewhat emphasized, which gives a fuller, "warmer" sound for softer music.

Their processing seems to somewhat smooth off any shrill edges that may be in any music they might play, so they can play a guitar and electric keyboard band like Dire Straits and it still sounds "soft", just a little more uptempo than the fare they've been playing over the years.

Or, am I just imagining this?
 
Haha, it's funny you revived my thread from 5 years ago! I've noticed that in recent years, WPLM has become a LOT more than WMJX. Last year, they added more classics, but now they've gone back to being more like WMJX. I've been curious about this announced change myself, and I'm hoping it's something huge. Though something tells me it might just be promoting a contest or a concert.

Doesn't Classical WFCC Chatham 107.5 put a good signal into the Plymouth area?

This just show how painfully long WPLM has been floundering with no direction.
 
Anyone remember "Variety 99.1" it was on in the late 1990's. They were great back then. Especially both in the morning and night with "99 at 9" (99 minutes of music)
In college, one of my assignments were to listen to a radio show and create a program clock, how we thought it was programmed. I chose "Variety 99.1" "99 at 9" When my classmates saw that clock, they were jeolous, "Let me copy yours, let me copy yours' "yours look easy, is that station for real" My teacher was like "99 minutes of music?" :)
That was an easy assignment for me :)

Yes!!!! I'm glad someone else out there remembers it!! I remember it was so unique, and I can't even think of very many songs they DIDN'T play. I remember I think it was on 6/25/95 that they flipped to Smooth Jazz. I was all bummed out. Because whenever I would hear songs that I had only ever heard on Variety 99.1, it would make me sad because I could never find a station like it again.
