Honestly, I'm not crazy about any of the rock stations in Philly. I have heard better examples of both Active and Alternative Rockers, past and present, including some stations formerly in Philly (DRE, the old Active WYSP).
While I think their sound is extremely bland, WYSP has the least to be ashamed of. MMR plays a lot of soft dinosaur rock from the '70s that their competitors constantly rag on. Meanwhile, WRFF is playing stuff like Alanis Morissette, Lifehouse, post-A Boy Named Goo Goo Goo Dolls, All American Rejects, Train, and a number of other acts that really have no place on the Alternative format (c'mon - doesn't B 101 or Ben play these acts more than enough?).
YSP is still in the early stage of returning to a Rock format, so changes could come somewhere down the line. WRFF, while having its moments, still sounds less like the Alternative format that Philly so desired and more like the return of Max 95.7, and at this stage seems to be cemented in this sound. And MMR, while I find it boring, is the solid performing stalwart in the market. I really hope WYSP goes for the unserved demos by playing edgier Active Rock bands - there's a lot of good stuff on the charts (Five Finger Death Punch, Killswitch Engage, Deepfield, etc.) that no one is playing. This sound would be much preferred over playing the same old tired Nickelback and Creed songs mixed in with predictable classic rock.
