WMMR turns 40

I was listening to an air-check of R&R Roots from 1978 just yesterday. That was Rod Carson's baby, and he did a great job. I think it would have to be updated from the del Vikings to the Dead, Chiffons to Cream. Even the early "underground" stuff would make a great show.

I did not care for them spinning Stevie Wonder today

And Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue" ranked #275 on the top 933, right between Genesis and Metallica.

Listening to this event has been really cool - it's like the definition of "rock" has been expanded to fit any old song and not just their typical format as of late.

This week, more than any other week, they truly are playing "Anything That Rocks".

The songs that ended up on the top of the list were interesting. Smells Like Teen Spirit was the number 1 song of the last 40 years (among people who listen to MMR actively enough to sign up for an e-mail list and vote online)? I guess that's where MMR's audience is, but I don't get it (and I'm right in the target demo at 31).

I'm actually mildly surprised that it wasn't a Pearl Jam or AC/DC song, given what I know about the Philly rock radio crowd.

What did you expect when they consistantly shove that song down your throat every day?

I'm 31 also, and I have to agree with you a bit here. Smells Like Teen Spirit most certainly had a HUGE part in changing the musical landscape of the 90's, and I will never try to argue any differently. But, I firmly believe that it is only important because of the cultural change it created. As a song it is fairly mediocre.
