WMMS TV Spot from '93

A few threads down I mentioned I came across an old commerial for 'MMS. It was voiced by the late Keith Eubanks. In the entire 30 seconds, you never see or hear "100.7", it's just "Today's Best Music, WMMS". Here is a link to the audio.

This may have been before they called it "Buzzard Radio: The Next Generation". I can't remember that long ago... I was only 13! lol

**UPDATE: I've just been informed that this spot was from 1994, not '93. See?! Told ya I couldn't remember that long ago! ;)

It was before "Buzzard Radio". Still just rock, it was either Malrite or Shamrock-owned then (transfer was in June 1993). Walt Tiburski would have been GM; PD was Mike Luczak. Rocco still in PM drive.

Buzzard Radio--and the alternative format--came in when OmniAmerica bought WMMS (and WHK) from Shamrock. That deal finalized on April 15, 1994--and Buzzard Radio started after Rocco's show that day.

Hey Igor

This has nothing to do with the previous thread but I was wondering when we're gonna start hearing some new imaging on 923X that doesn't include Cleveland's Xtreme Radio. None of the dj's refer to it but its still in your sweepers. Also how come you don't to the song intros anymore? They've had Tony doing them they sound awful

I want to go on record as saying Tony is one of the nicest people I've ever worked with, and the guy does a LOT for that station!

Originally when I produced the imaging when I was full-time, I designed the new music intro shells for me to update as neccesary... which I did. When I started freelancing, I told them that I would charge for the updates if I produced them from my studio. So instead of paying for the updates, they had Tony voicing them. After hearing the end product of what Tony produced, I felt the station imaging would sound better and should be uniform with the same voice. Last month I reminded them that our agreement includes free unlimited voiceover, so I have been giving them the dry voiceover workparts for the artist and titles for all of last months adds.

So there ya go!
______________

Today's Best Music? Lame.

G-Man resurrected WMMS with Next Generation. It's influence in the Midwest was huge. WMMS patterned after 99X and KROQ. Gorman made many trips to both markets to hear what was hip, then brought it back to Cleveland.
______________

That was a good era of music! Most of those songs were brand new then.

What strikes me about it is not only how good the music in it is.....but how bare bones it is. Just sound clips slammed together with a bit of an effect on the voice. Yeah, I know it was for TV and not for the radio, and done in the days before cool edit and pro tools....but I'd wager to say that the same promo cut in this day and age would have been heavier on the effects, even though IMO it wouldn't really be necessary. The simplicity is just kinda refreshing. Nice post Igor...and I think I remember seeing it on TV, even though I was only 12 :)
______________
