WMNC-FM (Morganton) Getting a Boost

There are enough stations playing what passes for country. They should do the music that's on the AM. Though the signal is great on the AM for a long distance, at least in the car of the people I ride with to the mountains.

To elaborate on the formats, the FM plays hot country; the AM (1430) plays Classic Country from Jones. Indeed, I would love to hear classic country on a decent FM signal.

Could there be a potential sale involved here with the 25Kw boost?

That's doubtful. There have been many offers over the years that never got very far in negotiating. The family has no interest in selling, it's a nest egg they live off of and they are happy with the way things are. Why change things if you are happy with it?

They have to be happy with the way things are, they resist everything that could make improvements or increase revenue, and just keep doing the same stuff over and over.

When I worked there, the business plan was "cut cost" not "make money" or "increase revenue" just "cut costs". Fine business plan eh?

John,

That "family" is notorious for cutting costs (as you and I both know). *wink*

OH how well I know that, and the shame of it all is that they are sitting on a gold mine and refuse to mine it themselves or to let anyone else mine it either. All those advertising dollars just left lying on the table ???

I don't mean to imply by my comments that there is anything wrong with cutting costs or keeping expenses under control. I do have an MBA now, (which I didn't have while i was working in radio) so I know the value of controlling cost. However you have to balance the equation of saving with necessary spending.

During my tenure there, there were many situations where a revenue opportuinty existed, but required an initial investment of cash to get the ball rolling. Over 95% of the time, they would pass up the revenue opportunity because of the initial expense.

Once upon a time some wise businessman said that "you have to spend money to make money". A lesson never learned there. ;)
