Has Anyone Noticed an Improved Nighttime Signal Over the Pittsburgh? 1360's nighttime Transmitter in Lincoln Township " Died" and they have Been running 250 Watts Non dir. from the Daytime Site on Beachwood Blvd.
 
I have noticed it on occasion. Seems to come and go.
Either they are doing this or I can't get them at all after sundown.

Given where the population is centered 250 watts nondirectional from
the city might be an improvement for them.
 
I believe that the original 1KW Raytheon transmitter is still at the site but is not being used for regular service.

That's the STA to keep them on the air, not an application for license.
 
Wouldn't 250 nights be the same as serving only Mon Valley?
 
In 1946 Their were 2 final applicants for 1360 Mckeesport, a group of bussinessman from Pittsburgh wanted 1,000 watts Daytime. and Mr Cox and his Partners who wanted 1,000 watts Fulltime. The FCC awarded the CP to Mr, Cox Because they said "He and his Partnert Live and Own business"s in Mckeesport". My Have Times Changed!

Probably not from the daytime site (near Calvary Cemetery). At 250 watts from there, it has a good signal density into Homestead and possibly as far south as Duquesne. Given the noise level, poor ground conductivity and co-channel interference, I doubt that the current STA facility packs much of a wallop into the McKeesport, the community of license.

That said, had Westchester somehow managed to get the FCC to approve the current 5,000/250 watt plant they're now using, WIXZ may have been more competitive against KQV back in the 60's and 70's. The nighttime signal would've been closer in to what was the center of population some 40 years ago.
 
Back in the Eighties, 540, 620, 730, and 1150 had strong nightime coverage of central Pittsburgh. Now they do not. What really happened?

540 Was Brought by a Man that Wants to Improve his 540 in Maryland WGOP Making it 1kw Fulltime For the DC Market. So He DownGraded 540 Here, But nimby in MD is Fighting his Transmiter site. 620 had to Move Transmitter Sites When they did that the Night time Power was Reduced to 10% [50 watts] WKHB had an Application to use 400 Watts But WTMJ Milwaukee Upgraded From 5 Kw Fulltime to 50 Kw day 10 Kw Night And Fought that CP. Then a new CP for 250 Watts was Approved But Very Dircetional My understanding was the Construcition Cost For the Signal was not worth it .1150 uses 70 Watts at Night Serving Serving NorthEastern Allegheny County. I have Never Heard Their Nighttime Signal in Pgh. Proper. Strong in Plum, Penn Hills.

1150 is licensed to New Kensington at 1,000 daytime directional, mostly vertical. They had a strong daytime signal with full Pittsburgh penetration, but did not receive nighttime power authorization until the late 80s. The furthest you're able to hear them at night was maybe Aspinwall at best. In the car, I lost them at Harmar.
 
Did MIghty 1360 or WIXZ ever pose a serious challenge to KQV?
 
No! Kqv was so firmly established and had the promotional budget of ABC behind them that a suburban station had very little chance of impacting them. The night time signal was poor over the city. Of course, KQV had problems to the north at night, but still was strong over the city itself.

By the way Ms. I just discovered a message you sent to me 2 years ago. Sorry about that. Next time you're in the area please contact me and we'll talk about KQV, etc. I spent several happy years there during the good times.
