WMOB DX Contest!

Where are you hearing WMOB? We might as well enjoy this while it lasts! I'll go first: 5x9 into the Chicago area most nights!

Yup...WMOB is LOUD and PROUD with preaching right now in Lexington, KY. I've been hearing them for months! Obviously on FULL daytime power/pattern and then some!!!!

Cool! Maybe it would help if I gave the frequency for those unfamiliar: WMOB is a gospel station on 1360, and I understand they have a brand new facility.

FWIW, I reported in another post, a few weeks ago I visited Honduras and Belize.....

WMOB was LOUD AND PROUD there, too!

Any chance I could hear them here near El Cajon? I do have a local omnidirectional (5kW day, 1kW night) co-channel 8.3mi ~W (255deg heading) that usually is full-quieting here. Where should I aim a loop antenna, considering WMOB and KLSD are almost on opposite bearings?

Bad fact-checking on my part regarding WCHL reception. Unless there's been a recent change, it was not WCHL.

Their website lists them as news-talk ..... so does Radio-Locator ..... and the CBS Sports Radio page doesn't list them at all.

I know something led me to believe it was they. My goof, though.

In any case, Radio-Locator lists WSAI OH, WYOS NY and WHBG VA as having sports formats. Whichever it was sat atop a frequency which was quite crowded for a while, though. So perhaps this would be a new one for someone. I'll try again later myself.

Sorry for the mis-fire!

I'm in Foley, Alabama, about 25 air miles from their TX site so naturally I hear it night and day.

In case anyone new is checking this out, the backstory on this station: Preacher man Buddy Tucker owns it and he has run it out of compliance in some form or another since he was forced to move from his original site just on the other side of the Alabama River from Mobile. He was forced to shut that down due to nearby construction. The metal industrial buildings caused his pattern to go out of compliance. The local paper also reported that workers on site were receiving RF burns when touching some metal parts.

Tucker secured another site further down the Causeway (US-90 which runs from downtown Mobile to Spanish Fort, across the salty marshes of Mobile Bay) but had trouble getting it licensed properly. The STA that was granted was for just 1 kW during the day. During operation under the STA, he had issues with the FCC over a construction permit. The new site's just a few miles down the road but the day service was failing to meet some requirement to stay licensed to Mobile. I think that's why it got bumped up to 9 kW. It's very likely that Tucker was running 5+ kW the whole time he was wrangling with the FCC.

The night service is for just 200 watts. On paper it shouldn't reach me at all, much less places like Kentucky or Chicago!

Being on the Causeway in the middle of Mobile Bay means the station has an almost totally salt water path due south, hence the fine reception in places like Honduras. I bet day service is audible in Cancún, Mexico with a good radio.

For anyone curious what the facility looks like, Google Street View has a good peek. Since this was taken, Tucker has completely repainted the building and painted WMOB / 1360 on it. Zoom out and you'll see just what a fantastic place this is for an AM station!

That is actually quite a nice site Zach! The view from the air is breathtaking! No wonder they get out well. It is remarkable that WMOB is able to override such a lot of noise and interference on 1360 at night. Although it is not a graveyard channel, it is hardly pristine. Kind of an interesting format, too. The music they play is quite different from most religious stations.

I am 9 miles SE of the WNAH (1360) Nashville transmitter site...with a bit of
nulling, I get a strong WMOB here on a TECSUN PL-606. Never thought to try, but just
got a positive TOH ID at 10pm central. Unreal.

With WSAI on 1360 here, there appears no way to get WMOB in this immediate area even though WSAI's night-time signal is decreased from its daylight one. I'm not sure how far you would have to go from Cincinnati to get WMOB with its current long-range signal.

I'm now a member of the club.

9:30-10pm last night (3/21) Far northwest suburban Chicago. My first try for WMOB here in far northwest suburban Chicago. No problem. Dialed up 1360 on the Walkman SRF37, and there it was....fair to occasionally good. On top for just about the entire half hour with only a couple of short fades. Very steady signal, and I caught a positive TOH ID.

With KKMO here, and the Gulf Coast being 2500 miles away, WMOB would NEVER make it to WA. Maybe if they pumped 100,000 watts with juice mainly Northwest, but that won't happen... ;D ;D ;D

I've been checking every night, and they haven't missed one yet. Signal ranges from buried in the jumble to way out on top! If you tune in and they're not there, wait a few minutes and they'll pop in. I really enjoy hearing that soft spoken southern voice doing the ID.

They're coming in pretty well in the Chicago area, so what about WI, MI, MN, IA, etc? Lawppy and Scrodinger, what about over your way? I figure one of these days this is going to come to an end, and we'll never hear them up here again.

WMOB is climbing atop the rest of the fray on 1360 in Central Indiana at 8:30PM EDT...the Drake R8 S meter topping 20db over S9 on the 400' inverted V long wire. 200 watts would not do this.

If WMOB has been broadcasting at 5K to 9K, I'm still astonished at how far that signal is getting out, considering how crowded that frequency is day and night. Not a graveyard frequency, but pretty crowded. What is the real story there?

I have a local on 1360 that I can try to null at night (peashooter signal), but have never really thought to check out what might be there.

Well, I guess it's possible Buddy Tucker bought a 10 kW transmitter and is running it at full power. On paper, our best AM signal should be 660 WXQW which runs 10 kW from a site on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay in Fairhope. But WMOB seems to get out a lot better with less power and a higher dial position.

To be honest, who knows what the guy's really doing. He's on a mission from God, rules be damned.

Last night we had the same suppressed skywave conditions here in the Chicago area that others have been observing. But some stations I wouldn't necessarily expect to do well were coming in decently, mainly on N-S paths. For example, KAAY. The biggest surprise-- WMOB just pounded in; amazing! There was some competition at tomes from George Noooooory and some sports station (ESPN, I think) but in general they have a fantastic siganl. I've become a fan and I'll probably keep on listening online if their nighttime AM signal disappears from my dial.

Zach, since you live in the area, I'd be curious to know how far north they are heard during the daytime (if you know)?

The logbook here has lost its virginity, too.

There was a nice WMOB ID at 10 last night off the GE SR II, with local WPPA nulled. (WPPA nulls at us at night anyway, so fair is fair).

WMOB seemed to have at least one other ID with it. WMVO, sounded like. Can anyone confirm ?

(Lol -- on an earlier try, at 8PM, in came this top-heavy 1360 ID : 'WDRC and WDRC-FM HD2 Hartford, WMMW Meriden, WWCO Waterbury, and WSNG Torrington'.
That must be some jingle package they bought).
