WMOD 98.7 Washington DC April 1974 Lee Perkins Dick Lillard

As I recall, WMOD didn't last very long as an oldies station. The aircheck revealed a Sunday night Doo Wop show, which they called "Great Rock 'n' Roll and R & B".

At the time of this aircheck, "Happy Days" had just premiered on ABC-TV. Oldies stations in 1974 were largely 50s and early 60s based. You had stations such as WMOD, WCAU-FM Philadelphia and WCBS-FM New York. While WMOD and WCAU-FM soon changed directions, WCBS-FM never got that memo and continued into the 2000s. Jack experiment excluded, only WCBS-FM remains, now as a classic hits station. :)

I'm not sure when WMOD became oldies, but I remember them as oldies in 1972. I also remember them playing currents like the ELO version of "Roll Over Beethoven". That would have been 1973. I also remember hearing Kool & the Gang's "Funky Stuff".
