WMOJ Cincinnati Switch to Sports on Jan. 2

Former Urban AC WMOJ-FM (MOJO 100.3) switched from Rhythmic Oldies to Christmas music on Nov. 8. The CBS Sports format will debut on 100.3 on January 2nd. Young Urban WIZF (101.1 the WIZ) is now the only Urban FM station in Cincinnati. WDBZ-AM (1230 the Buzz) is Urban Talk and WCVG-AM (Gospel 1320) is Urban Gospel. Urban AC/Oldies is unavailable.

The situation in Cincinnati is sad. :'(
boston is even sadder. It's sad that Hartford, Ct has an Urban AC (1480am), and Boston doesn't even have one. The only thing that is cloest to Urban AC is "Funkytown 93.7 HD 2" sad

Im sure WDBZ AM will add some Urban Oldies into the mix later down the road. They already air Tom Joyner in the morning.

Or conversely, perhaps WIZF could evolve back to the great mainstream urban they used to be ??? i.e., WVEE, WDKX, WBLK style.

Wow, never thought Cincinnati would lose a gold heavy R&B soul station. That's surprising given how huge the urban demos are there.

Apparantly day-parted urban radio is a thing of the past in most major cities, especially with two urbans with different audience leans under the same ownership in a market. Even KMEL in San Francisco stopped day-parting last year and plays 90% hip hop during middays now, with almost no R&B till 10 pm.

What you say is true about the lack of dayparting on many stations these stations. Particularly noticed it on WGCI during the morning shift a few months ago, when the hip hop jams kept coming from the overnight shift. I thought to myself, this is not the WGCI I used to know which was famous for dayparting.

However, with fewer urban choices in some markets I would not be surprised if it started to make something of a comeback.

Radio One is a joke. Mojo 100.3 did well but it was a poorly programmed station. It had none of the energy of the original Mojo 94.9. I wonder if the problem is with their sales staff and not the Jammin Oldies format itself?

It had to be the money. A sports format will make more money than a Urban or Rhythmic Oldies format. Mojo died when it left 94.9 however it was interesting to see Radio One with a Rhythmic Oldies station. I actually like the New Wave mix.

If your looking for a similar station you can try Movin 94.5 in Myrtle Beach SC they have a good mix

I'd rather see them put ("Fox Sports Radio") on one of their FM's
I was in Cincinnati this past summer, I was staying about 35-40 minute drive north of Cincinnati, I picked up "Fox Sports 1360am" perfect in the day, but at night, so bad, can not hear their signal on a Portable radio.
Why I'm saying this?
Has any of you ever heard "Fox Sports Radio" especially at night, during J T The Brick, and "Big Ben Maller" , "Mike North".... whoever their Producers are, they seem to like Urban Music a lot. They use a lot of New, and Oldschool Urban music coming back into the show as Bumper Music.
The Bumper music can be anywhere from 30 seconds to just over a minute.
Listen some night when you have free time and you will see.
"Yahoo Sports Radio" is simular, but "Fox Sports Radio" is much better.
Listen and you see.

Considering how fast so many urban stations are disappearing because of the post-PPM radio environment, dayparting is surprisingly thriving. WVEE and KPRS are to PPM-metered urban stations that have actually sustained themselves well in these days.

KMEL is in a very unique market situation. San Francisco-Oakland has a significant Hispanic and Asian population along with a relatively low black one for an urban station. Interestingly, KMEL's largest share of audience is also males. The unusual audience composition has allowed them to go mostly hip-hop with only BDS R&B chart toppers as a part of their regular playlist. However, they seem to still be one of the few urban stations still known for breaking new music from local R&B/neo-soul artists like Goapele, Ledisi, etc.
