WMPM

Not sure if anyone has noticed/cares but up in Smithfield WMPM is back on the air.
Southern Gospel,, Country, and 70s and 80s pop.
I guess they have a new "manager" and it is a one man show.
Hope it works for them, but I believe Carl Lamm took the life from WMPM when he started WTSB.

It is great that WMPM is back.I have spoken to a couple of the new folks, they seem really nice and I believe they will make a go of it.A start up situation can be stressful but to me it would be very exciting to start from stratch and build a station.I think they will keep it live and local.I love the hometown Mom and Pop's.That is real radio and I admire anyone who is trying to do that...

Allen

Oh there are more than one?
Just thought it was Blake.
Anyway I hope the best for that old station.
He has a lot of work to do to rebuild after the Exodus to WTSB.

There is a guy named Mike Rose who works with Marshall Stevenson on his bluegrass show who jocks some.He seems to be a nice guy and I think they may be looking some part time help.Mike has invited me up for a visit one day.I've never been in WMPM.I'd like to go.Maybe I'll take Double J with me.
He is my bodyguard and he attracts all the chicks.I love the old hometown
radio stations. They smell like a real radio station with the combination of coardboard record sleeves, cigarettes, brut and coffee. That is the radio station smell that I love.I bought a record collection from a station in Murfreesboro in 1993 and it had that smell. The old WEGG in Rose Hill smelled like that too when I bought vinyl from them in 1997.It used to be you didn't get hired unless you smoked(cigarettes and other things) and drank coffee all day.I do neither so I guess I was lucky...

Allen

Alan I doubt you will be smelling any smoke in that building.
Carl did not allow it from what I have heard.
But unless it has been packed away they have a ton of records.
The building is pretty old, lots of history there.
A couple of years ago Carl had a new board put in and a new transmitter.

Yeah I too would like to go and visit there. I spoke twice with Blake, but he was too busy to talk with me at the time. I'm scheduled to talk with him tomorrow at about 9:30am. Mike Rose is a nice guy I've met him a time or two when he came to be on Marshall's show. His forte is recording rather than the radio biz as he has Audio Farm Recording studios. I could tell by listening to them that they do need some help on both sides of the mic. But I like the localness and the fact they're a start up. There's a lot of potential there.

Yeah I hear Mr. Lamm is a nice man if not a little different. He is a radio legend for sure.Double J I'll call you this weekend.Maybe we can ride to Smithfield next week if Blake & Mike's schedule allows...

Allen

Is WMPM hiring and how do you go about applying for a job there?

MR. Lamm is the voice of Johnston County radio.
Yes he is a bit different, but for what ever reason different has worked for him.
Come to think of it, different might be why he has always done well.
When you listened to WMPM and now WTSB you do not get the same cookie cutter crap radio that has been forced on us.
I think there is something special about the way he has done radio in Johnston County.
On another board a while back WMPM was being discussed, and someone from up North was making fun of the comercials on WMPM now WTSB, calling them hickish, I must admit I like the live reads.
Reminds you of Old Time radio.

It is not hickish. It is real, local and one to one.I love that kind of radio. Some of your "bigtime" radio empires could learn some lessons from great people like Wayne Alley,Chester Thompson and in my view the best ever SammyWestbrook.
They know how to relate to an audience in a very human way..

Allen

That is my point. That kind of radio connects with the listener.
That is also why I feel that programming a station locally is better than getting your orders from Atlanta, Texas, or New York.

Personally I am hopeful that as the value of the big companies continues to fall in 2008 we are going to see a return to local radio.
At some point these people have got to figure out what they are doing is not working!
People want better radio, real personalities, and live personalities.
Trust me when I say this, people can tell when the DJ is canned on a harddrive.
My wife does not know the first thing about voice tracking and the radio business, but even she can tell the difference.
