I remember back when Elvis died WMPS had a kickin' news department...Bud Leonard, Dan Sears, Mike Donegan, Larry Bachus, Velma Cato and Vicki Wallace.

Does anybody know where those folks are?

WMPS had the best playlists and Jocks anywhere. Ron Jordan, Roy Mack, they all sounded great (when I was a kid anyway).

As of August 1977, I'm pretty sure the WMPS news department was:

Bud Leonard
Dan Sears
Wayne Weinberg
Mike Donegan

By early 1978, Susan Morris was there, perhaps replacing Donegan when he left. I believe she later worked at Channel 3 as a reporter.

Hey Dano, your phone's ringing. We need you to give us the scoop!

On that fateful day in August 1977, WMPS news was Larry Bachus (news director)
Bud, myself, Vicki Wallace, Donegan, and I can't remember if Velma was working then or not. Susan Morris may have taken my place when I left to go to WREC.
As to where some are now. I am over in the Ozarks of Arkansas. Bachus has a pump valve biz and consulting firm in Nashville. Someone told me Bud had passed away. I have no idea where Vicki is, and I spoke with Donegan about 3 years ago. He was still doing a morning show in Nashville at the time but I believe that has changed. I have searched alot to try and find Roy. Ron is supposed to be up along the East coast writing songs. He contacted me a few years back when he was doing a show in West Plains, MO. He had some big plans for doing live reports for stations from Graceland during the annual August memorial service. A few years back my basement flooded and I LOST all the old airchecks from those days. Sure would like to hear from anyone that might have some???? Thanks for asking and let me relive some of those memories.

Saur
Wayne Weinberg was Michael St. John the MPS PD at the time.

Dan, I can assure you that Wayne Weinberg and Michael St. John are not the same person.

Michael St. John was PD of WMPS in between Rick Dees and Tommy Charles. Rick was fired by John Rhea circa October 1976. St. John (real name Michael Anzek) was brought in as PD shortly thereafter. By July of 1977 St. John was gone and replaced with Tommy Charles. Tommy had been with WMPS before, doing middays in 1973.

Tommy was the last Top 40 PD of WMPS. The station flipped to country on March 6, 1978 under the direction of Craig Scott. Craig was also Plough's VP/Programming, so within a few months he brought in Bob Knight as PD (NOT Robert E. Knight, who was WMPS chief engineer in 1978).

Wayne Weinberg later spent 11 years as morning news anchor on WDBO in Orlando. He is still in Orlando, working in the administration of the University of Central Florida.

Re: WMPS News(Musicradio 68 and more)

Maybe between the two of you we can fill in this gap in my MPS memory:

When was Tom Dooley on mornings on WMPS and what happened to him? I remember he was pretty entertaiing, and played the guitar on his show. I sat in with him one time, and shortly after that he left...but no one knows (or will say) why.

Re: WMPS News(Musicradio 68 and more)

You are absolutely right. St. John was the PD and was there during the time frame I am talking about. Wayne was the ND then and was hired after Bachus left. But Weinberg was not there when Elvis died.

I think it was Phil Garner who took mornings on WMPS after Dees went to WHBQ, then Tom Dooley. Tome evntually moved on to Continental Radio, an early attempt at Satellite programming, with a hybrid contemporary Christian/AC format. Jon Rivers, Tom Kent, Rick Tarrant, Stu Robb, Catfish Hunter and others were there.
Tom is in Texas now, doing free lance work.

The last time I talked to Roy and Mark (son) they had a house in Walls, Ms. just off Goodman road. Roy (couple of years ago) was still working in Nashville and his ex wife Cheryl was working as a deputy for the Desoto County Sheriff's Dept. The last time I worked with Jordan was in the early 90's in Somerville.

Re: WMPS News(Musicradio 68 and more)

I remember Tom very well, extremely talented and quite the musician too.
Mostly I remember his hair, looked like a cross between Art Garfunkel and Don King.

Re: WMPS (for Dano Only)

Thanks
That's more than I have heard about him since I left Memphis. Was he working in Nahsville Radio? At one time he was married to Sandy Holmes who was a WMPS Sales Mgr for a bit. I thought someone told me they had ended up with a small Ad agency.

You're absolutely right about the hair. Thanks for the info.

Rob, are you in your new digs yet? I plan on stopping by one day.

Yep. The studio is up and walking in Brunswick. It's at 8755 Chaffee Road, Suite #102; new phone is (901)373-1853.
It's only about a block from the original Satellite Records studio location, which had no luck in Brunswick, moved to Memphis and became STAX. So, I take a studio from Memphis to Brunswick. I often do things backwards...

Jordan brokered some airtime from my station for a short time around 1993.
I was Ops Mgr at WVIM at that time.
Didn't last long but does anything he does?

The man was one of the funniest men I have ever worked with.

I wonder where he would be now if he Stuck with that last big job offer.
