WMRI Marion changes call letters

106.9fm WMRI is now WXXC and it's a very hushed legal ID. I wonder what format they will try now. They are still on the bird at night and it's Lite Rock 106.9.

That reminds me of that great Family Guy episode with the fat people. :)

Can't imagine them making any kind of change. They held on the Beautiful Music until they just couldn't anymore...even ran BM statons in other markets whether it made sense or not (we've done BM in Marion for 40 years, it'll work everywhere!).
______________

Nice blanket statement about the BM history. Since May of 2004 106.9 has been owned by a different company. NOT the BM company that ran it into the ground.
Stay tuned...

Based on the calls:
All-Sports (XC = Cross Country)
Modern Rock (stealing a page from X103)

Best idea yet: Xtreme Country -- All Big N Rich All the Time

It's been "Lite Rock 106.9" for at least a year now. I'd guess those years as beautiful music made for quite an image problem with the WMRI calls.

XXC = 80 in Roman Numerals = 80's? (although it may properly be LXXX).
______________

The website (http://www.wmri.com) is still up and indicates no changes. Just to be clear: the calls have changed on the FM? But the format's still the same? I grew up with WMRI and have long felt it to be one of the best stations I've ever heard - as an easy listening outlet, they were nearly perfect, and that radius! - so I'd definitely like to hear what goes down with this.

They've actually been calling themselves "Lite Rock 106.9" and AC for a lot longer than that. After they segued to AC from Beautiful music around 1998 or 1999, they ran locally programmed AC by day and hot AC by night (via WW1's Bright AC). I remember thinking that was a strange network choice at the time, especially since they called themselves "Lite Rock 106.9." I don't think even 6 months passed before they went to the Jones AC satellite format, which I believe they still use after 7pm to this day. Back then, they were still owned by Bomar and had "Lite Rock 102.7" WLEZ in Terre Haute as their lone remaining affiliate on their regional network. They flipped from B/EZ to AC not long after they sold WEZV 95.3 in Lafayette to AMP in 1998. WLEZ was sold to Crossroads Communications a few years back and Mid-America bought WMRI/WGOM not long after that.

I'd speculate that the B/EZ history initially caused them some problems, but since so many years have passed, they've had time to get the word out about their format, etc. I speculate they'll either compete with WLBC and go hot AC or CHR (probably not a bad move, especially if they want to make a splash in Muncie) or flip to some sort of rock format.

It's been forever since I've listened to WMRI.Back when I was attending graduate school and/or taking post-graduate courses at Ball State University, this was the station where I would have it tuned at Paul Harvey time.I remember how, in 1980, I was taking some courses in special education, early education, and music appreciation. Right before Paul Harvey came on, they would play The National Anthem and dedicate it to the hostages being held in Iran, saying that this would be part of the programming until all of the hostages were finally free and back home again. When this wonderful event finally happened in January of 1981 after 444 days, I wondered if they would stop playing The National Anthem right off or what. They played it again "lest we forget."Very touching...

Well, it appears like 106.9 did in fact change their format. They are now classic hits going by the name "106.9 Double X-C...Indiana's Classic Hits."I was quite surprised about this to say the least. Imaging sounds much better than that of "Lite Rock 106.9," etc.I would have figured they were at least going to keep the AC course, but maybe give WLBC a run for it's money. Instead, it looks like their going head-to-head, more or less, with Backyard's classic rock simulcast, 93.5/96.7 Max.WXXC is also saying "Marion/Muncie" in their legal ID.That's really all I have for the new station since it fights with WGLM (at 106.7) here in the Lafayette area. I couldn't really give the station a good listen as a result. Anyone else have any opinions about the new WXXC?

While I'm in favor of the new 106.9 WXXC, "Indiana's Classic Hits," I do believe the name is misleading. I've been listening on-and-off to the station for the past two days, and I would classify the station as JACK. I've heard everything from Aretha Franklin to the Gin Blossoms to classic Billy Joel.XXC says that they're playing what people want to hear and that they're playing songs that people can sing along to. It'll be interesting to see how things go with the station. The idea of a JACK-type format is good, because the JACK-FM from Indianapolis can't be picked up well in the Muncie/Marion market. If XXC markets itself well (to the "soccer mom" crowd), it could be a competitor to the Backyard Broadcasting stations in the area, including WLBC.

Indy's JACK is a niche format in a very big radio format "pond" if you will. Marion's WXXC is musically MOR or Adult Hits. Two names for the same thing. Is XXC more a threat to WLBC or to their Classic Rock combo?RG244
