WMRQ-FM 104.1 disses their competition

Right now Radio 104.1 (WMRQ-FM of Waterbury/Hartford) is running a spot when going into a commercial stop set. They "tune the radio dial" and land on 4 different stations playing "Slow Ride" from Foghat. The ad strongly implies WDRC-FM 102.9, WHCN-FM 105.9, WAQY-FM 102.1 and WPLR-FM 99.1. However, this spot is different than a different spot they used last year. In that spot, 4 different radio stations were all playing "Fancy" from Iggy Azalea. It also sounded like they were using REAL clips from the other stations being dissed. (I know I heard Linda Renyolds of Hot 93.7!) Were they told to knock it off when using clips from other stations perhaps?

What competition? WMRQ is Modern Rock. WDRC, WAQY, and WPLR are all Classic Rockers. WHCN is a Variety Hits Station.

Every station in a market is a competitor to every other since there are only 100 audience shares ever available. And from what we know of listening, a person's most used stations (which are between 5 and 6 a week) tend to represent different moods and formats, not just the same format over and over.

And WAQY and WPLR aren't major players in Hartford, anyway. Their focus is Springfield and New Haven, respectively. As for KML's original speculation that one of the other stations may have lawyered up and told WMRQ to stop sampling their audio, it sound to me that WMRQ has decided to refresh its old "everyone else plays the same stuff" campaign with a new target. I'd imagine most modern rock listeners have either a CHR or a classic rocker as their "other" favorite station -- or a satellite channel, if they also subscribe to SiriusXM.

I loved the spot though! :)

My other favorite modern rock/alternative station is WCYY-FM 94.3 of Biddeford/Portland, ME. (Good station, might I ad!) I don't hear them making an add dissing the competition though. Then again, Hartford/New Britain/Middletown is a larger market than Portland's is.

I miss the good old CHR/Top 40 days when 96 TIC-FM and Kiss 95.7 used to rip each other! (Voiceover legend Ernie Anderson used to tell Kiss to "pucker up!")

Is it me or is WMRQ extremely over modulated and compressed. Every time I tune in I have to turn the radio way down.
