WMRV and Merv

The obits should make special mention of WMRV, since it's named after "that dear boy" (as Arthur Treacher used to introduce him) Merv Griffin. And WMRV should make reference to Merv today. Many of us recall when Merv's face was part of the WMRV logo in the late '60s/early '70s! And didn't Merv pay a visit or two to the old WENE/WMRV studios? May he rest in peace.

JON; I applaud you for mentioning this. This station, WMRV ,was indeed was named after the late Merv Griffin. I was told as well that he turned the station over to his wife and she wanted to keep it in his name..

I wonder what happened to the mic he used when he was on TV, it ws the same mic that was in the MRV studio for years! You might want to *check 1,2* into it.. ;)

I was there for 2 years under the ***Great John Carter***

Really cool.
I love radio-history lessons.
you guys are awesome!

Gee..what a surprise..The Binghamton Press got it wrong! The bigger story would be if they got it right! They haven't in 50 years, and it's unlikely that they'll start now. It's a wonder they bothered to mention the stations at all. It would be more like them to say "A local radio station".

Merv's guys laid a good foundation for WMRV, and it's still there after n subsequent owners. I believe WMRV had the biggest successes after Merv's ownership ended.

I'm not so sure that the best location was chosen for the WMRV tower, but the signal is acceptable in the market. Perhaps land was just too expensive on Ingraham Hill at the time that WMRV moved from 105.5 to 105.7 and vacated the WENE center tower. Are any of the engineers that were involved with that move still around?

Fine thread and an informative read. Thanks to Jon and all who contributed. WENE and its staff were always held in high regard in the golden era of Top 40 AM.
