WMTR Playing 70's Music?

When did WMTR-AM start playing hits from the '70's? I put the radio on this morning and heard Badfinger's "No Matter What." Is it just present on the weekend or is it played during the week? When I've listened during the week, I've heard just a mix of '60's and '50's.

If you play 60's-style pop music, "No Matter What" fits right in. It's from 1970 and sounds like a mid-60's song. 95 out of 100 listeners don't remember what year songs first came out. They either like the overall sound of what you play or they don't. That's why almost every oldies station plays "Uptown Girl", from 1983.

True Oldies stations like WMTR are starting to mix in a few 70s hits. Its about time. A few won't hurt and I doubt anyone will mind.

I certainly don't mind, there are a lot of "oldies snobs" out there who think that anything recorded after 1969 is "garbage".

I agree... I'm enjoying it more now, since it reminds me somewhat of what CBS-FM used to sound like. Adding 70's music will be also great to broaden the playlist. Kudos to WMTR!

No problem with adding 70's music to a station like WMTR - particularly if you're talking about pre-disco era music. Stuff up to 1974-75 works just fine. Sonically and emotionally, it's very similar to material 10-15 years older.

They started a few weeks after CBS-FM changed to Jack. Right now they're playing mostly '60s music, with some late '50s and early '70s hits mixed in. They are thankfully avoiding Disco and '80s music, which can be heard in abundance on the FM band. And although WMTR is not playing as much '50s music as they used to, they still play more pre-1964 music than any other Oldies station in the area, and feature a Doo-Wop show on Friday evenings.

Eventually, I suppose WMTR's playlist may become as varied as 1500 WGHT, which claims to play "all the hits from 1955 to 1985".

Big mistake before you know it it will be like CBS-FM. When I hear Billy Joel then I'll turn it off and get satelite.

I happen to think that the 70's tunes DO give the station that "Feel GOOD Vibe." Having said that I am in agreeance that a turn towards "disco" would be the end ALL. The 70's tunes that I have heard to date DO seem to blend well and seem to be positioned within the rotation accordingly. Being the ONLY "BIG signaled" Oldies station in the area they can stand to take a few chances/risks and see how they pan out...much like the "LITE FM" situation in NYC. I would LOVE to see the weekend jocks do a specialty show like other stations do such as a "countdown" or "Request" show. All in all I seem to enjoy the direction the station is heading.

Keep up the Great Work!!

PS- I used to like Billy Joel until I saw how conceited he is on American Idol 3 years ago when the performers sang his songs... He should focus more of his efforts to driving ON THE ROAD! Jeeeeesh, I feel much better now!

"agreeance"!?

Tom-

I DO appreciate the defense. I would think that these boards are a "Forum" rather than a 6th grade classroom. Perhaps our resident "Grammar Authority" MISSED CLASS that day!

Much Appreciated Kind Sir!

If everybody was in "agreeance" with his ultra obsession with WCTC and AM Stereo, I'm sure he would have no problem with the word, even if it did not exist! :)

MTR will likely stop with hits from around 1975, just before the disco era. Look for them to gradually lose some of the late 50s too. They're moving a bit newer musically.

Here "Still the One" by Orleans now.. That's 1976/
