WMTW to relaunch 5PM newscast Sep. 9

I believe there may only be a couple of commercial "big 3" network-affiliated TV stations in New England that don't have a 5 P.M. newscast on weekdays.

I can name four right off the top of my head. WAGM (5:30 but not a 5:00), WVII (not until 6:00), WVNY (6:00 and 7:00), and WSHM-LP (6:00).

The rumor mill has it that 22-year station veteran Steve Minich, currently a feature reporter and fill-in anchor, has been tapped as co-anchor with Tracy Sabol.

They debuted a new "8" logo too. Mic flags and some green-screen graphics had the new logo but most of the on-screen graphics featured the old one!

By Tuesday all the elements were in place. Everything seems to be running pretty smoothly, in part because their change was less ambitious than WCSH or WGME. All that razzle-dazzle can't disguise the fact that their reporting ranks are pretty thin compared to the competition. The new music package is standardized across the entire Hearst chain, although they don't use it as effectively as other stations in their stable IMHO:
