Actually WMUF-AM is 5kw days and 2.5kw critical hours, but no CP for night operations of any type. So they likely didn't sign off at Chicago sunset.
In my brother's town of Knox Indiana, local radio station WKVI simulcasts their FM on the AM, and the AM is a daytime only station that is supposed to operate at 1.8kw days and 350 watts during critical hours to protect WWKB Buffalo NY & KOMA Oklahoma City, but I believe they stay on day power during critical hours, and once their AM was still on the air past midnight. The station transmit from 1 tower, and the FM bays for the FM are on the same tower. If the station really wanted to be legal, they could apply for night operations since they're far enough from both stations to upgrade to Class B status. Plus there's plenty of land available around Knox Indiana that they would have no problem putting up a directional tower array. With the population there, they could run standards or oldies on the AM side, but would likely be satellite as the FM is satellite much of the day.
