WMVX

I was listening to WMVX on my way home and noticed that they have eliminated all of their sweepers and imaging between the music. Instead, a female voice announces the title and artist of each song as it ends, and then it goes directly into the next song. In all of my years in radio, I have never heard a station do this before. Daune was talking even less than she usually does, reading 1 sentance liner cards before going into traffic or weather. Very strange.

Also, is this station still reporting as Hot AC? I don't think I've heard a Hot AC current on that station in months, save for Sundays mornings with Casey's Top 20.

Sounds like the old TM Stereo automated rock format from the 70's...That was Debbie Boone with "You Light Up My Life." and before that "Fire" by the Crazy World of Aurthur Brown"...1/4 second pause... Great Music With Less talk..Rockin Stereo 1065 WXEN! ???

Is This Some Sort Of Jack RadioThing?...A Friend Of Mine Called Today And Said "Check Out 106.5 FM-It Sounds Like A Robot Has Taken Over" - Is Today The First Day They Did This? - Is This Our Future In Radio?

For years.....research has shown that listeners have consistantly wanted to know name/title of songs more often.

And the programming philosophy has been to either back/pre-sell songs alot....or a little, or none.

The fear is Back/Pre-selling could be a tune-out if the fave song the listener wants to hear was just played.

I listened to 1065..... and while it makes sense when it's a OHW from the 80's with an obscure artist....or a new song......it works. And appears to be a listener benefit.

But when it's a song they've been playing daily for a decade.....Pat Benetar "Hit Me With Your Best Shot"

I feel like they're talking down to me.....

Duh.....of course I know it's Pat Benetar.

Overall......a bit jarring.

Well I'm not surprised... she DOES have a 10a-7p shift that's pretty much ALL taped. Won't be shocked either to hear WMJI's Action Jackson blab less during his 2p-12a shift. WMVX still has the blando "Mix" name and logo, too.

From the way I see it, guess it looks like the end is nigh. The countdown to 106-5 KISS FM is already underway...

Once again CC Cleveland provides crap radio. Instead of MORE personality radio, they give us less. All associated should be broomed!

What about getting Rover?

I think Chuck's referring to the personality radio of old... the WMJI of his time, the WMMS of the 70s/80s. Rover's a hot-talk/talk-radio host that doesn't play music... Maxwell barely makes the cut, if ever. Action Jackon, Daune Robinson, Jay Hudson, et al., are all good, capable hosts... it's just that CC - thanks to their "less is more" edict - has stripped them all of their on-air identity and personas.

Scary thing is, WMVX may not be the first station to go through this phase... what happens to WMMS after Rover comes on board? And are WAKS, WMJI and WGAR immune? Or is WMVX the only station in the cluster to try this because management knows full well that they will, to quote Baby Animal, "Go... bye-bye!"

Ironically WAKS seems to have put all of their imaging back in! I haven't heard a dead segue on KISS in weeks. They're sporting a new jingle package as well.

I wish I could hear that rimshot talk AM in Toledo that Chuck runs. I bet its the best sounding AM on the planet and the ratings are huge!!

Wait....Just Checked.

Guess Not.

How on earth does he find the time to program a station when he is clearly on the boards ALL day EVERY day.

Wasn't that the job of the on air talent to let their listeners know what the name of the song they just played, and a little bit about that song, like we heard while growing up in the 70's and 80's...It was alittle strange hearing that voice come on after every song this morning, then Brian and Joe finally announced after every recorded voice aired. It sound like the old Schaffer Audtmation System we had on a AM station, and after every song a recorded man's voice just said "Those are the Oak Ridge Boys with Dream On" then the next country song aired.

I can multi-task. Try it. Amazing what the human brain can do.

WTOD...yeah the numbers suck. We're a daytimer, at low power. But we're 133% above budget. That's all that really matters.

Daytime status can't really be changed. Although... we were just issued a new CP for a new tower site that will allow 4300 day...and 2watts night. I know..I know. But it's better than nothing. Once the new tower is up I'll petition my VP to get after the attorneys about more night power. Only station in the way is Radio Disney 1560 NYC. They don't come close to serving our metro...or Ohio for that matter. So we should be able to get more juice. We'll see. The CP was just issued so we have 4 years. With Cumulus' privatization deal not done yet the tower site won't be seeing anything done for a little while.

We do stream... www.supertalk1560.com Help yo'self.

Back to what you'll hear. For a mostly sat fed station, it's still entertaining. And since my background is imaging, I'll put it up against any station in the market. It's fun, irreverant, entertaining and sometimes even informative. Most importantly it makes money.

And I'm not on here as much as you think. I may make multiple posts, but it's all in one day within minutes of one another. Days may go by before I post again, even on the same subject.

Most of my time, ie posts, is spent on the Production forum talking about topics related to imaging, techniques, gear, etc. U know, useful things.

Exactly! It's called personality radio. Not "automaton radio".

I know Daune and Jay personally. I've had quite a few drinks with Daune. Both very talented. So let them BE talent.

Good luck with the CP. WQEW-Radio Disney is probably the biggest waste of a 50,000 watt clear-channel station... if not THE biggest, coming from New York. (IMHO, if any station needed to be downgraded, it should've been WQEW and NOT WOWO.) The only concern would be the faltering state of the AM band in the first place... IBOC doesn't help. Neither does established, heritage AM stations having their staffs and programming cannibalized for a buck. So hopefully the long-term plans for WTOD aren't too little, too late.

Man, you know what sucks? Clear Channel!

Things sure are different than they were in the good ol' days. What are these jokesters thinking? Hahahaha!

CCU isn't the "worst" company out there. Citadel has a worse reputation. And there's many a small operator across the country that bounces a paycheck here and there. At least CC's checks clear. Now, I'm not wholly defending CC. Just saying the grass is always greener. If you've never worked for CC then your really not qualified to rip them - unless you REALLY know the business.

Cumulus has an even worse reputation. If only they would realize how much Jan Jeffries is holding their stations down by blatantly ignoring rhythmic titles.

I digress. Back to the topic.

What is even wose about what WMVX is doing is that going into stopset breaks, the robotic-drone-woman still back announces the song - and then the jock break begins. (Like they couldn't tell us what song it was? Even if it's 20 years old and we all know anyway?)

I couldn't agree more. The only reason this guy still has a job because he throws every single person who he feels threatened by under the bus (which, as we know, is typical of insecure managers like him).

I realized this over the weekend when I heard this -- and some wrong back-announces as well. WMVX is a prime example of robot radio.

I see this as WMVX just throwing in the towel, and giving up. Hell, just tell their entire audience during the stopsets to tune into either WQAL, WDOK or WMJI instead... it would be a more direct and honest approach. They might as well have blown up the entire format and simulcast WTAM instead, while waiting for KISS-FM to scoot over there.

I can't imagine anyone wanting to tune in to a piece of dog poo like that. Guess that's the price you pay when you don't employ a program director at the station for over a year. Nice job, Kevin Methany. (*sarcasm*)

Oh, and not only are the songs 20 years old, WMVX has been 80s-centric for over 10 years. Obviously this shows that Methany doesn't trust their listeners to know the tired songs on their 10-times-burned-out playlist... as if they HAVE ANY to begin with.
