100000watts.com is reporting that Clear Channel's, 1400 The Peak WMXF/Waynesville, has dropped it's Adult Standards format for a simulcast of News/Talk sister station, News Radio 570 WWNC/Asheville.

What I don't understand is why CC wanted to buy WHCC (previous WMXF calls) in the first place? They typically just want the FM (WQNS in this example), if it's in a small town like Waynesville. My argument is, for example, they didn't want WSIC in Statesville. Out of the 4 stations licensed to Haywood County, WPTL (920) in Canton is the only local. The rest originate from Asheville.
This is nothing short of a tragedy.
I sort of like WPTL, but it has no nighttime signal.
WWNC doesn't need any help. It's very strong.
Asheville desperately needs a station like this. People retire there. WTZQ is Useless Classics and you can't really hear it in Asheville.

Another fine example of the geniuses at work again. They never allow much time to pass before they pull another super smart move! From what I hear the folks in Waynesville are fit to be tied. Regarding the WTZQ mention, when they have their hours of local programming, morning and afternoons, they butcher the format.
You hear Huey Lewis, and other 80s tunes that have no business being in there. I've even heard Whitney Houston. Maybe that will change now that The Sinks are taking over the station again! That's another story though. ???

Unbelieveable. Actually, Whitney Houston is normal, unless you mean "How Will I Know" or "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" or "All The Man That I Need".TheStoker said:

Is there not someone who realizes there are retired people in the area?
Is WHKP actually doing Music of Your Life or are they still doing a mix of talk and music?
I have to question why Star got a signal boost with WHLC so close but I imagine they're picking up a lot of listeners and hearing from a lot more who wish they could listen.
WMUU is surely benefiting, but they're kind of boring and they play sacred music so much of the time.

Clear Channel should never have bought so many stations. They should have been required to sell one or two. And WMXF had no purpose whatsoever.
Too bad there are so many Christian stations in Asheville.

Clear Channel would never admit to making a mistake! As far as John Roten goes, he is still doing the normal standards type morning show. The WWNC simulcast starts at 9 or 10.
Regarding WHKP, they are playing some AC type music with other 'full service' stuff thrown in. Rush, etc.
The guy in the afternoon stands out like a sore thumb! You might hear Rick Derringer, or about anything. All over the road.

Back in the good ol' days, when I was growing up, WQNS and WMXF (then WHCC) were both country, both locally owned (by the Frye family then the Campbells during most of my time growing up) and based in downtown Wanyesville. I think we've covered the history a few times here, but I'll hit it again in broad strokes to address the question of why CC ended up with it. Vann Campbell (a great broadcaster in my humble opinion) sold WQNS and WNCC to Blue Dolphin Communications, a company run by broker Ed Seeger. Ed also bought WMXF-FM, licensed to Old Fort; and WTZY-AM, licensed to Fairview. Call letters were changed and shuffled around, and the result was that WHCC became WMXF, and WMXF became WQNQ. The two FMs, WQNS and WQNQ, began a classic rock simulcast with John Boy & Billy mornings. The Waynesville AM was changed to Standards, and WTZY remained WTZY with conservative talk. Later, WTZY was given the WPEK calls during one of many many format changes. At some point, operations for the four stations was combined in West Asheville, in the business park across the road from the Barbecue Inn. WQNS/WMXF also kept a studio and office in downtown Waynesville, although they gave up a significant portion of their office space. Betty Jo Nichols, a true angel and one of the most amazing salespeople I've ever had the honor to know, remained working for the stations through many many owners until her untimely death a few years ago. I remember fondly stopping by once a week or so to share afternoon coffee with her when I was running WWIT in Canton...but, I digress.
Once things were essentially settled, Blue Dolphin sold the four stations to Clear Channel, who clustered them with WKSF-FM and WWNC-AM. The rest, as they say, is history.

Thanks to corp greedI was in a store last Thursday where WMXF was played. They had what I was told was taped music. I think it was Barry Manilow.
Another store had Michael Buble. Hey, people like this music!
Now the restaurant where I ate breakfast used to have WLOS or WSPA. They were playing soft rock from somewhere. Not pleasant. Ever try to find a table away from the speakers? It's not easy.
