Time to revisit this topic.
I was in the mountains last week. I don't know what was wrong with WWNC's signal where I was--I've never had any trouble with it--but I still say it's normally strong enough that it doesn't need any help. Waynesville needs a community radio station. As of now, the community announcements, local news, local commercials and The trading Post are being done by WPTL in Canton, which seems to be a very good radio station. It uses satellite music most of the time, but otherwise seems to be getting the job done.
WMXF started airng WWNC's talk programming several years ago and even dumped its one local program, the morning show, which had good music. Except when WPTL plays music--and it's signal leaves something to be desired--that area is a wasteland. There is NOTHING on the east side of Asheville.
WMXF has continued to air Tuscola sports, and its web site says it added a talk show which airs on several area stations, separately from WWNC. I did hear one encouraging program: American Legion baseball. Is this new? The Citizen-Times doesn't list it. Local advertisers seemed to support it heavily.
