WMYF-AM Among The Missing

The 1380 spot on the AM dial has been bereft of any emissions, nocturnal or otherwise, from WMYF, Portsmouth. WNRI, Woonsocket, RI comes in very well though.

I first noticed it over the weekend (11/25,26). I don't know why, but it's not unusual fior some marginal AM stations to be dark on weekends...perhaps they have no auxiliary transmitter and it's the only time engineers can do maintenance. But here it is Wednesday and I'm still getting WNRI, Woonsocket on 1380.

Well it must be on reduced power or using DA-N, because I'm continuing to receive WNRI clearly 20 miles SW of Islington St with nary a hint of interference, and previously 1380 featured WMYF with interference from WNRI.

I figured it was time to do some research, so I travelled up Route 495 to the Seabrook, NH visitors' center, and indeed WMYF was in fact on the air, but with a weaker signal than I recall at that spot. Previously it boomed right down the coast and overwhelmed WFEA-AM 1370. Today, I received fair-to-middling signals from both WFEA and WMYF at that location. Travelling back south on Route 495, WMYF disappeared totally near the Merrimac (that's the way the Town spells it)/Haverhill line. So they're either operating at reduced power for some reason or running a directional antenna even during the day.

???

Perhaps 'the grinch who hated WMWF' made off with their regular tower and the station's only option (to remain on the air) was to go low power? ::)

I went to the WMYF website and it is definitely not being maintained http://www.wmyf.com/station_events_calendar.html

With the short days around here and virtually no listenership (other than the DXer crowd) can't blame them for staying directional all day. I am getting interference in Dover and I have never had that problem with WMYF during the day.

So, time for speculation: this station has got to be on CC's chopping block. Until then, CC should replace it with Fox Sports Radio.

I tried again today (Tuesday) and it seems back to normal now. It's amazing how during the period of reduced power, WNRI in Woonsocket came in unusually well, now it's covered by WMYF.
