WMYR 1410 and WCNZ 1660

These two stations dropped the always entertaining "True Oldies Channel" for a 'mix' of music that can only be described as bizarre. I have never heard such a strange mish-mash as their selections! Very unlistenable. They also dropped their morning news block and hourly newscasts. Bad move.

Too bad. They did sound good. One less reason to turn the AM radio on.

OK... I would describe "bizarre" as, say a guitar-based instrumental as hard as anything I've heard on an AOR next to a soft Joni Mitchell album cut. Glenn Miller's "Moonlight Serenade" next to a country cut...
My big beef with the format is the large percentage of unfamiliar music that is not identified. Also, with a total lack of promotion and the limited number of AM signals here anyway, no one who might like it will even know it's here.

The ownership of these two stations, and the weak signaled WVOI on 1480, seems to delight in working in a vacuum with total disregard for the competitive situation in this market.

Maybe thats the new "Fred" format...........just joking..............

If I recall comments from awhile ago many were speculating that new owner "relevent radio" was going to flip those stations to a faith based format anyway. They are still the owner right? I guess we could/should be surprised that they are playing what they are playing, bizarre or not. And what about WVOI, I think also owned by the same group and at one time carrying The True Oldies channel. What format do they have now?

Scott Shannon has a vacation place down there, I am sure he is not a happy camper.

Actually, I dont have a problem with the choice of music. That's how it was played on stations back in the 50's and early 60's anyway. They didnt have the sliver thin niche formats like they have now. Popular country was played on top 40 stations all the time. I was a disc jockey back in the mid 60's and the format skewed older during the day and younger at nite. Big band, top 40 and country were all played in the mix.
I thought when 1660 went on the air, 1480 had to turn in their license after 5 years. Guess they figured a way around that didnt they?
Something is wrong with 1660 now. Used to come in good even during the day up here in Sarasota and excellent at nite. Cant get them during the day anymore, and nites are a stretch. Have the edge of the everglades dried up where the TX is?

Q105 had the morning zoo, then Mason did a 2-hour oldies request show, then they were a hot AC middays then more of a true CHR at night. And they had massive ratings...... and the "Jack" and "Bob" formats are doing well lots of places with train-wreck segues all over the place....

And before Mason did the oldies on Q105, Scott Shannon did a great hour or so of oldies at noon. The best Q Zoo in my opinion was when Scott Shannon and Cleveland Wheeler did it and I think Ted Webb did sports.

I too was a DJ in that era, but the music played then was more hit-based. This is much more obscure.

WVOI is still on the air but I don't know whether it's on legally. It still has Scott's TOC. He hasn't told me yet how he feels about this latest move. Their signal, poor at best, is getting bothered by the upper sideband of the new 1460 WNPL. Don't think they have that station totally finished, engineering-wise.

Back in 1999, when I put (then) WMIB on, it seemed we had a better signal in some areas than now... Used to do 'test programs' at 10kw on many Saturday nights. Got calls from as far as Dennmark.

Scott has always been a talented performer.

I'm sick of stations playing songs I've heard already. I like obscure... and if you don't know the song, google the lyrics... jeeez

Tough to do when you're driving down the road, providing you can decipher the lyrics.
I like obscure, too. Just not their obscure.

One thing's for sure - these narrow playlists are boring. The same old songs, station after station. Some kind of variety would be welcomed.

When did WMYR stop airing Radio Disney? I was under the impression that 1410 and 1660 were to begin airing Catholic programming such as from EWTN. And, who, if anyone, is the Radio Disney affiliate for the Fort Myers - Naples area now?

WMYR stopped airing Radio Disney a few years back.

There is no Radio Disney affiliate station in the area.

And their Catholic programming, which went off months ago, was from their own bunch at Relevant Radio... the owners.

Curiously, they are also running Chicago Cubs games.

Actually, this format adjustment is probably a good thing. A year or so ago, I lamented the fact that there were no Oldies in SW Fla, with the shift of WOLZ. Now with 92.5 and 1070 up and running, the market might have had a hard time supporting all three.

The Avenue might have a real chance, in my opinion, as there really isn't anything else like it around. As the ChicagoJazz link pointed out, too often a "smooth Jazz" format slides into easy listening. There's enough varieties of Jazz around that isn't played on the radio to make this unique and different. Unique and different is what is going to be needed to play music on AM, in my opinion.

1070 is no threat to anyone but themselves.
I wish WMYR/WCNZ luck with the new format. I do hear more repitition than I think there should be, and a bit too much Norah Jones.

I like the Classic Top 40 format better than the True Oldies Channel. WQUU in Chattanooga uses Clasic Top 40, and it don't put you to sleep.

I have listened to 1070 a couple of times this week when I was in the car and have noticed that they are running live local DJ's during the day. I have also notice that the music selection is more 50's -70's then it was before. I am still not sure just where this station is headed.

Me either. They (at least the mid day guy) are playing a few more older oldies, ones that actually were on AM in the day. Maybe they'll lay off some of the later ones and the MOR oldies in return. Then, they'd be hoppin'!
