WNBC drops one episode of Crosswords

The move is a bit more than that.
It is part of some other big moves, such as the cancellation of the 5:30 p.m. features based newscast News 4 You, the recent firing of consumer reporter Asa Aarons, and last month's elimination of 5:00 p.m. newscast with the creation of the 7:00 p.m. New York Nightly News.
Now there will be a 5:30 p.m. newscast, bringing Sue Simmons back to some of the 5 p.m. hour.
The insipid still Extra leads off the 5 p.m. hour and Access Hollywood goes into the vacated second Crosswords slot at 4:30. Access Hollywood repeats again in its current 7:30 p.m. slot.

In all fairness, News 4 You could have worked -- in another timeslot, perhaps in the late morning. And there was room for such a program in the WNBC-TV schedule before the Today Show grew another hour and caused the resulting ripple effect (I still don't get moving Days of Our Lives to 2:00 to make room for Martha Stewart). News 4 You and its soft news format would have worked perfectly at 11 or 11:30 AM, just before that horrible iVillage program.

I've seen a few episodes of Merv Griffin's Crosswords and so far...it's okay. Perhaps if I were into crossword puzzles, my opinion would be different. But new game shows really need time to build an audience, even if the formula appears to be a winning one -- I've seen only good reviews early on for this show. But, God, it's on in NYC in a very tough timeslot, against Oprah and Judge Judy. The Ellen DeGeneres Show didn't do well against Oprah last year, and that mistake was quickly corrected. And, since there's no where to put Crosswords, perhaps they are just biding their time for Deal or No Deal next fall.

Here's a thought: Does Universal have any sitcoms currently in syndication? Perhaps they can put that show's reruns on their NBC O&O's if it's a high-caliber program. I know these days, especially in major markets, sitcom rights are normally saved for the CW's and My's and UPN's of the world, but I digress.

Why run "Days Of Our Lives" at 2? Simple. The
competiton's weaker. At 1 it's on against the second
half of "The Young And The Restless" followed by "The
Bold And The Beautiful" (the one-two ranked soaps) on
CBS, and "All My Children" on ABC. At 2 it's up against
"As The World Turns" on CBS and "One Life To Live" on
ABC, both of which are up and down in the ratings but
(especially ATWT) have seen better days.

At least Channel 4 didn't put it at 3, where "General
Hospital" sent "Guiding Light" scurrying to 10 AM in
New York years ago.

FYI, KYW-TV 3 (CBS O and O in Philadelphia) airs Crosswords at 9 AM Monday-Friday and Family Feud at 9:30 AM Monday-Friday.
