WNBC's 5 PM Show Rebrands - Again

If there is any local show I dislike more that the new channel 11 news at 10, or Fox 5 news, it's this one.

WNBC-TV needs to be doing a REAL newscast at 5:00. Fluff such as this should be on earlier in the day. How this show has lasted this long is a mystery.

I have to say, I really don't get the LX brand. It's inscrutable and - from my casual perspective - it stands for nothing. I think I'm happy to see it de-emphasized.

Does anyone know how this lifestyle news is working for WNBC? Imagine that CBS, ABC and even Fox all have real newscasts at 5pm but WNBC is doing lifestyle news. Nothing hard, no desk, no neckties, no anchors or reporters over 35. The latest details about Arnold and Maria's break up, a new exhibit at the Bronx Zoo and who has the best Japanese food in New York.

Whatever the ratings, WNBC is heavily invested in this project since they also have a 24 hour subchannel doing pretty much the same thing as the main channel does between 5 and 6pm. No one at Non-Stop New York (the name of the subchannel) is making much money, since they're all in their 20s and early 30s. But it still costs something to program this stuff around the clock.

By the way, it's clear that Joey Reynolds' "Up All NIght" talk show from Midnight to 2am on the 4.2 subchannel is gone. They must have cancelled it in haste because my cable system was still listing it on the Program Guide for a couple of weeks after it was off the air. Can someone explain why "Non-Stop New York" would program a talk show that airs between Midnight and 2am, hosted by someone in his 70s? And then what changed that they drop it suddenly? The ratings weren't good? How good are any of the ratings for this subchannel WITHOUT Joey Reynolds?

Finally! WNBC-TV made the change that the 5PM newscast is coming back once again after a 2-year absence. First, they tried "LX New York", and then "New York Live" which is now currently, it didn't work. A lot people who tuned to either channels 2, 5 and 7 for their news at 5PM, but now, "New York Live" is moving to 3PM this fall. Excellent move! They should bring the news back and rename the brand "Live At Five".
