They filed a request in July, 2018 to reinstate the assignment of license and requested a STA. They can operate as long as the FCC hasn’t officially rejected the request. No idea when the FCC will make a decision one way or another.

Now the question is... will they actually turn it off, or will they file another request and drag this out? I have seen similar scenarios play out for years.

They might as well give up. On a recent road trips half of the familiar stations I used to hear as a child are now gone or basically destroyed by the owners and running low power, bad, low or no audio at all. Just static all the way to Tupelo. 580 in Tupelo was off the air, 1490 had some sort of rock format but you had to turn it all the way up to hear it. A sorry state of affair with AM radio these days.

I was in Tupelo two days ago (Thursday 26th) -- you might've had it the other way around: my observation was 580 was very low, running an old-school R&B format, and 1490 was off the air entirely. Last time I was in town, about a year ago, 1490 was also down.

580 used to have a great signal. I remember you could get it clear all the way to West Point at night. It was definetly off the air or or extremely low power the last time I was there, I couldn't get anything but static. 1490 was still there but running on fumes badly distorted and low audio level. It seems everywhere you go these days you hear stations doing that. 970 Brandon 1240 Flowood, 950 Hattiesburg, WIZK AM Bay Springs and a host of others. Such a waste.

WHSY in Hattiesburg was doing better last time I checked. They are in the process of rebuilding after Charlie Holt passed away. I heard 950 AM back on last time I was through Hattiesburg, along with the FM translator - audio was pretty good on both. WIZK Bay Springs was sounding much better last time I was through Bay Springs. The FM translator actually sounds good - I'm not a big fan of old country music, but they were running the translator in stereo and L/R separation was obvious within 5-6 miles of the site.

I can confirm that they are still on the air. They won't turn it off without the transmitter being physically incapacitated. And, honestly, I doubt the FCC is going to care much about a low power AM in Meriidan, Mississippi.
