WNBN and WMER

I've recently cancelled my satellite radio subscription so I've been spending more time on the local radio dial. I wandered over to AM and noticed that WMER and WNBN (both in Meridian) have dead air on their frequencies and have for a few days. I haven't been able to find out anything - anyone hear of anything? I looked at the FCC's website and WMER recently had an application for STA but it was dismissed. WNBN has no STA application and both have renewal applications filed.

sad to hear that. WMER was my first GM job.. and I changed the call letters from WFEZ to WMER. Keep me posted please.

Frank Rackley passed away some time ago. I understand that some of his family tried to continue to run WNBN but had to shut it down. Supposedly they are trying to sell the station, but I don't know how that will work.

As for WMER - Mike lost a transformer in his MW-5 transmitter 3-4 weeks ago and hasn't been able to replace it.

Jonathan, it's been awhile! Thanks for listening. Yes Sir, as Mr. Burns said... transmitter problem. Over the past few weeks, 1390 AM WMER acquired a new tranny, and is back on. A few steps still to go... well, until all is final. -and at the same time, WMER's translator- 93.1 FM- was moved to it's new tower site. What a ride!

In Forest I can get 93.1 for WMER . I sort of wish that the FM was done several years ago when WMER was Contemporary Christian like it was years ago. As you are now it is a good break at night from our local Southern Gospel outlet WQST-AM which is a daytime only station.

But barely

Kudos for the storm coverage you at WMER did. This was better than what MISS 103 does during storms in the Jackson area. I think I got more information than anywhere else on the Radio Dial in either Jackson or Meridian. I live in Forest and learned from your station some news about Scott County that would probably been reported later on the Scott County Times web site. Between WMER and WLBT on TV I would not have known about the severe weather that went north of us in Scott County and in your case the EOC reports from the Scott County area. Thank you for being there at 2:00 to 3:00 in the morning reporting weather updates.

So very kind of you! Thanks very much, I've always felt that's what we're here for. Some of the "big time" radio stars lean toward 10 songs in a row, no news, no weather- and heavens forbid a dj do a break and talk more than 10 seconds. I've never been able to enjoy that. If all I get it's music, I can fix up a custom cd with my favorites or load an iPod. For me, like yourself... I use to drive 5 hours home to visit. It would be storming so bad. This was in 2002-2005 and out of 12 radio stations, I'd have to pull over and sit it out. Not a single one did anything. I'd just shake my head. Right then, I promised myself, if I ever was in the decision making chair again... I'd do everything in my power to give people the things I thought we all need. Certainly great to know it helped. I'd have to toss those "radio values" credit to 3 guys, that stayed on me from the time I was a kid... Van, Eddie and Ken, Sr. (solid, hardcore, hardworking Meridian radio pioneers.) -and thanks again, you made my day. Fantastic!

Van, Eddie and Ken, Sr. (solid, hardcore, hardworking Meridian radio pioneers.).....Guess I was chopped beef !!! I remember you coming up and hanging out with me when you were still in school, just call me the rodney dangerfield of radio......(scrunches tie) no respect at all...none i tell yuh

It has been a while since this thread was posted. Turns out that WNBN is back on the air with an oldies format. I was trying out a new active antenna today and found WNBN on 1290 AM. As for WMER, the gospel on 93.1 is coming in load and clear in Forest. At least we in Forest do not have to do without our southern Gospel since WQST-AM left the air.

I've notice while driving through Meridian that 1390 just doesn't get out that well down interstate 20. How is it that someone in Forest is picking up a little 75 watt translator but the main 5000 watt AM station can barely be heard? I've noticed the other AM stations in Meridian barely make it much past the state line without static if you're lucky.

I don't know but on my Kaito KA-1103 I pick up 93.1 just as clear as I can pick up any other FM station. It must be an anomaly but I pick it up pretty clearly much of the time.
