From WNCI.com:

ITS GREAT TO BE NOMINATED, BUT...
IT'S EVEN BETTER TO WIN!!!
And a job well done to the dedicated staff and management of WNCI 97.9 on winning, once again, Radio & Records Magazine 2005 RADIO STATION OF THE YEAR!

But I thought this was the worst CHR in America???(sarcasm)

Congrats to the hard-working crew at WNCI! You guys deserve it.

Alright, go ahead and flame away cause I am sure you all will.

In what category? All stations? All CHRs?

For what? Programming? Promotions? Imaging? Tiddlywinks?

In what sized markets? All markets? Medium markets?

Some of these industry awards you have to pay to be nominated... is that the case here?

Good marketing can make even the smallest award seem like the Nobel Peace Prize. I am not trying to take anything away from WNCI, just that I take everything I read with a grain of salt especially coming from their own website. Without qualifiers on the award it's hard to say what they are "station of the year" for.

This is like 1460 exclaiming that they are the 4th highest rated sports station in the country.

Once you put it in context it might not mean all that much. It sure sounds good though.

So WNCI will take this and run of course (as I would expect ANY radio station would do) and everyone listening will think, "Wow, I must be listening to the best radio station in the country." How the best radio station in the country can exist in the 35th sized market and currently ranked #4 in the market in the latest TREND is kind of beyond me.

In all the markets nominated the stations were the top rated CHR/Pop stations in the market.

So now we have a couple quantifiers. Congratulations to WNCI for being the best CHR/Pop station among 5 nominated stations in markets smaller than Sacramento, CA and bigger than Lexington-Fayette. It's like being the best in the minor leagues. Does anyone know who won the title in Triple-A baseball last year? Neither do I.

Edited to add: I should note that I don't dislike CC or implicitly hold anything against WNCI except I think they could do much better with that station that's all. I understand most of the moves they make with their playlist although I don't necessarily agree with them. I don't like the Morning Zoo but that's just a matter of opinion. I like having CC in the market though and I look forward to the Dublin move in and even wish they were allowed to seize control of 103.1 to do something more professional with that signal. It would be nice if we could get a Channel Z type station back into the fold.
Edited by CBusDave on 06/30/05 07:18 PM.

your bitter envy is causing atrophe of your frontal lobe. "R&R Station of the Year" implicitly requires all of those departments be taken into account (you d-f!). If it were based on individual departments at the radio station it would not be called STATION of the year. I think other trade publications honor specfic areas/departments, like Promotions and Engineering (which I think CC's Columbus chief won that, too).

What? "minor leagues"? Does this assume that markets #26-50 are incapable of executing major radio? Oddly, you recognize that all the nominees were/are the top-rated CHR station in their market. Well, by your criteria, those stations/markets suck really bad because WNCI beat them. Or, are you suggesting that there are other large markets that did not get nominated that had better stations? Poughkipsee? Baton Rouge? Orlando? Where? What stations?
Which only leads me to wonder... If you are only capable of standing on the street and gazing forlornly through the window, what does that say of your (in)abilities?
If you insist on making such general dismissive strokes, offer alternative suggestion(s) or shut the #$*% up, bee-yotch.

> Edited to add: I should note that I don't dislike CC or
> implicitly hold anything against WNCI except I think they

What do you want done? Decades of top ratings and (regularly) the market's top-billing station is not enough? If not ratings and revenue, then what measures do you suggest are better?
In any business, you put up a product and let the marketplace decide. Public tastes be damned, because the almighty CbusDave knows better. We're not worthy. Please guide us from this radio desert. Please "Dave" and "Incog-know-nothing" we beg for your blessings. Save us from only achieving top ratings and big revenue. There must be something better.

> understand most of the moves they make with their playlist
> although I don't necessarily agree with them.
Can you sack-up and offer any specifics? What don't you like? Gwen Stefani bother you? Kelly Clarkson not popular enough? Will Smith too clean for Columbus sensibilities?
What would you do differently? Why that would be better? Based upon what measure, your half-facts and petty outsider jealousies?

I don't like
> the Morning Zoo but that's just a matter of opinion.
Finally, some sanity. You are welcome to your opinion. I think most can respect any individual's opinion if you explain a little about why you hold that view.
However, assuming "Dave" makes you not a woman, then you are not supposed to like a 20-something female-targeted product. Stop trying to wear a dress. Stop trying to use the tampon. It was not made for you, it makes you look bad and it only causes you great discomfort.

They are big, but that does not make it possible for them to perform miracles. That frequency makes Marconi wish he had been working on the microwave oven instead.

It would be nice if we could get a Channel Z type
> station back into the fold.
Yeah? If it was so freaking successful (beyond just you guys that whine and cry on this board), then why has no one put it on instead of, say, Oldies or Hot AC or "Ted" that all were launched on new sticks since Z went away?
Get over it. Your tastes clearly do not reflect a broader (popular) appetite. Blacksmiths went away because people stopped buying their goods/services. I assume there were equally bitter postings as yours on the Blacksmith-Info message board during the early 1900's.

Load your iPod and play disc jockey in your parents' basement, wannbes. That's as close you're going to get.

Re: A look at the competition

I'm not a huge CC fan, but I have to point out a few things. WNCI winning "Radio and Records station of the year" is indeed a bit more prestigious than something like "The Other Paper radio station of the year... Not to insult The Other Paper, which I enjoy reading, but just trying to point out that R&R has been the radio industry's leading trade pub for years, and that award is indeed something to brag about.

Columbus isn't a "minor league" radio market either. Consider that Columbus is comparable in size to Orlando and New Orleans... Market 35 isn't anything to sneeze at.

Another funny observation! Blacksmith-info.com was a very happening spot on the telegraph, from what I hear... Actually, I intend to purchase an iPod, and load my favorite songs along with a good selection of classic jingle and aircheck snippets from WLS, and see what it sounds like. No need to bitch&moan about how radio should sound, when I can possibly use an ipod to replicate the Big 89, right?

Re: A look at the competition

I am not even going to bother addressing this considering it once again totally glossed over the whole point of the post to make childish remarks. When you are interested in having an intelligent debate that doesn't include personal attacks that have nothing to do with the topic I will be more than happy to expound on why I posted the things I did.

How dare anyone be critical of the almighty WNCI. This kind of response is exactly what makes people like me absolutely hate WNCI. The ego bigger than the signal. It's been going on for years on this board.

The trend came out today and WNCI got a big boost this time so kudos to you and yours. Go pound your chest and brag to everyone that will listen how great WNCI is and insult anyone that would challenge that opinion.

Hey Pot, have you met Kettle? So what face are you writing this post with hypocrite? Weren't you the one who was name-calling in a previous discussion about WNCI just a week ago? So, until you can practice what you preach, shut it, no-talent.

The fact is, you can't respond because you aren't able to add anything. Just another one of your typical responses when pushed into a corner. Nice try masking your ignorance with that response (ooh, and you used 'expound'). When you're called on the carpet, you put your tail between your legs and hide (or in your case, call people names). Oooh you so tough behind that monitor aren't ya, Mr. Puss?

> How dare anyone be critical of the almighty WNCI. This kind

You can be critical of whoever you want -- as long as you have FACTS to back it up. The only thing you bring are OPINIONS. Opinions based on the fact you don't even FREAKING LISTEN to the station. It makes you sound like a whiney loser when you consistently complain about a station you don't even listen to (not to mention, you're not even a P1). Plus, you insist on stating 12-plus numbers that you read. 12-plus doesn't meant crap. Except to freaking morons (the name you used before) who try to make some sort of valid argument about a station's performance. IT'S THE DEMO, STUPID!!. And lest not forget, you're just a bitter piece of trash who was put out long ago for collection.

Another fact: a CHR programs according to the market demographics. PERIOD! If you had a clue, you'd know what I'm talking about.

> The trend came out today and WNCI got a big boost this time

They're TRENDS! And there you go again spouting 12-plus numbers. I've challenged you and your cloned-halfwit Incog-Know-Nothing. You BOTH failed those challenges. Do you need to be reminded? If you can actually challenge, then bring something to the table instead of what you have been. It gets boring b*tchslapping you two helpless saps around (but it's still fun).

You make it too damn easy to make fun of you and Incognito. You continue to show your outright stupidity about CHR or even radio in general. You just added to that when you asked what WNCI won in regards to "Station Of the Year". You must be a graduate of the "University Of DUH"!

Dude, educated yourself or just STFU. You've been proven time and time again, just in a matter of weeks, you don't know what you're talking about. I can't wait to see what brillant response you and/or your Partner In Patheticness Incog-Know-Nothing have to say in an attempt to defend yourself or save face to your "friends" here on the Columbus board. You'll just prove my point even more.

Re: "Clean-Up in Aisle 10, CBusDave"

I chose not to respond in order to not perpetuate this garbage that no one cares about except you and GeeksRUs. I have no problem defending my position and if you want to meet over a beer I will gladly do as such but this has grown out of the stated purpose of this message board. You want to call me all the names in the book to my face, that's fine, it's just not appropriate in this forum.

Incog-know-nothing? How original but to name yourself richardhead, now that's pretty good. Since Dick is short for Richard, we now have at least something we can agree upon and that's your name.

I would also like to extend an invitation to you Dick to meet me for a drink. Now Dick, remember this, you don't know me now but you sure as hell will know me then.
