WNCT-AM 1070 on the selling block???

At least it's what I've been told by someone who deals with local radio.

Apparently Beasly want to sell the building, towers and land (and station) - and move WNCT-FM out of there.

Anyone have any truth to the rumor or additional details?

Shame to see this station get turned into another Jesuscaster or worse yet, ESPN/Fox Sports Radio (like AM 1490 & 1450in New Bern). It's really one of the few listenable and likeable stations down here (along with 97.9 The Bear). :-\

For Allen's sake, I hope not. He's built a nice station in 1070.

But that said... I have been surprised they kept it ever since they bought it with WNCT-FM in 1996. Everyone else is in the building in New Bern.

The ECU baseball games would have to go somewhere else if they sold 1070. IIRC the contract says so. They already cram basketball that no one cares about onto 107.9 so, hell, what's another sport?

If they plan to sell 1070 WNCT-AM, don't be surprised if it becomes "Sports", i'm sure WGHB would like to buy this, if "The Price Is Right!"

Just wondering if the “facility” may be worth more in pieces than as a whole. Its been years since I was in the area
and I can’t remember how many towers (6 I think) or even remember the area the station is located in. But the real estate may be worth more to a non broadcast business than to a broadcast entity. Beasly could spin off the property to a developer and sell the station (license) to an unsuspecting radio person/group and stipulate that the transmitter be re-located by the new owner. The “new” station could possibly be downgraded to 1 kw or 2.5 kw with a two or three tower directional array. Even building the towers and ground system would be an expensive proposition, and given the current economy, would it be feasible? Just throwing this scenario out to enhance the discussion. It would be a shame to see the station downgraded from 50 kw to 2.5 kw, but even worse for it to become another “religious” radio station with the technical quality that most religious broadcasters are known for. Of course it could be downgraded AND become a religious station which would be the worst possible outcome. What do you guys think? After all it is AM and who in the world cares about AM in the 21st century.

Sometime around 2006, WNCT made some changes to go to 50 kW day and 10 kW night with 5 towers.

I thought it was 4 towers now?

The whole array is surrounded by apartments. Well, mostly... one side is the county dump. The station could probably benefit from a move out into the boonies.

IMHO, (@triadnewsman) you may be surprised who would care about a well-executed AM programming service. I just saw a story how WFAN AM 660 (Sports) and the NYC ESPN station are in a battle for the morning show ratings for the Male 18-34 crowd. Of course, with FM, FM HD, Satellite Radio, .mp3's, IPODS, and such; there is much competition for media delivery. However, I do believe that with properly-done niche formats, there is a place for AM radio.

Is there anyone else on the coast doing a Beach/Boogie/Blues format? If not, it seems that WNCT would be able to pull it off. Look at what 94.3 did in Myrtle Beach? It took YEARS for it to be a ratings success, but they eventually did well with it. I think the current programming lacks proper promotion. However, Allen has done a great job with the format!

Hey, I love AM radio, I guess its the romantic in me or deep down I am a masochist. When I said "who cares about AM radio" it was my feeble attempt to be sarcastic. Your format idea is great. And I agree, from what I've heard, Allen has done a remarkable job. The upper management probably hasn't given him the support because "its just AM".

Hey guys & girls thanks for the kind words and I hope I have been a small part of what I think is a very good sounding station(yeah I'm a little biased). There are several of my co-workers who have done alot of work on 1070 and I really appreciate them very much...It is a slow process and a labor of love for me....I love radio just as much or more as I did the first time I ever walked into a radio station..It makes me feel good that my peers that I respect like the station....John Cannon,Mack Jones,Doug Moreland,Annette Graddy & Fred Rouse just to name are a huge part of 1070....1070 is like one of my children...I love it and want it to grow and prosper. We come a long way and we've got a long way to go..
Thanks again!!!!

Allen

Is Mack Jones working with you, Allen? A LOOONNNGGGG time ago - probably late 80's, I carried a show he was syndicating. I think he called it "On The Beach" (but, not really sure about that). We carried it for a good couple of years on WCBT AM in Roanoke Rapids.

Mack's show is Carolina Classics...Charlie Brown has On the Beach...At one time Mack had around 40 stations who carried his show and he owned 94.3 in Wallace fo a while..He is a great guy and 1070 is happy to have him..he adds alot to the station....

The problem is that the only sportstalk available down here is ESPN (and to a lesser extent, Fox Sports).

The two stations in New Bern that carry Fox Sports programming and ESPN are usually either off the air, operating at reduced power, having dead-air issues, audio quality issues; or the proverbial "clash of feeds" - where you get two satellite feeds plus one or two commercials all playing at once.

And then there's the copious amounts of 60 hertz hum heard in the audio on both stations.

The irony is that both of these stations are owned by a CONSULTING ENGINEERING group!

This engineer has a good mind to drive down to the studios and ask them if they want these things fixed for good. :-\
