WNCX has a new morning host

... and it's someone familiar to the Halle Building.

Former WMMS and WXTM host Slats took the job earlier today. Start date on WNCX is to be determined.

A very solid move for WNCX, especially with repairing relations with an audience that was more than likely turned off by the utter mismatch of The Maxwell Show in the morning slot.

Question now becomes, does this change the long-term speculation from here (and elsewhere) about where "The Fan" will operate from in the future? Hmm.

Wow, very cool. And not to pat myself too hard on the back, but I do believe I mentioned a few times that this would be a strong move for WNCX. I believe it was VOdood who said Slats was working at a golf shop and most likely would not be interested. Guess they must have found a way to drag him from warm and sunny Orlando. Looking forward to checking him out in the morning! Wonder what this means for Nard.

Very nice.

Slats always been a class guy and a solid host. Good for Tim.

Nard probably has behind the scenes work or weekend duty in his future.

I think Slats was one of the front runners around the time when CBS settled on the disaster known as Mudd, Mike, and Mihalik. Good fit and also a NASCAR fan, which definitely deserves a listen from me.

@six, I stand corrected. I'm sure Tim made sure it was worth it to leave sunny Orlando. Good to have him back. Class act 24/7. Had the privilege of working with Slats at WMMS/Tower City. He took care of his producers. Talented, stand up guy. Perfect for 'NCX. He's blue collar, talks sports, knows the music and has a sense of humor (remember his Shawn Kemp parodies? Priceless.)

I would think that Nard (along with WKRK staffers Verlane, Josh Potter and Tony Mazur) will more than likely produce comedy bits for Slats.

Nard as a producer/sidekick...that could work.

I think will hold up well against Rover & 107.3. He'll fit in better than Maxwell & will be the best they've had since Stern, though Scott with Mike & later Jeff wasn't too bad. Better than Mud.

Ha, well Vodood I'm glad you were wrong on this one. If his morning show is anything like his afternoon show was on WMMS then this is the best thing NCX has done with mornings since Stern. Should be a huge hit with the classic rock crowd, good mix of music and comedy. Anyone know when he starts?

Slats is going to take WNCX mornings to a new level. He'll be entertaining and playing music. Two things the station both likes. Maxwell was a poor fit, and he tried to do his WMMS show on a station that appeals more to an older audience and want music instead of non-stop chatter.

If I remember, Slats also had interviews on his show as I can recall hearing him interview Diane Neal of "SVU" fame when he was on the old WXTM. I also remember hearing bits that made fun of Dr. Laura's short-lived TV talk show, Sesame Street and Elicia Battle (the woman who lied about losing her Mega Millions lottery ticket).

This might be the best move WNCX has made on AM in years.

It is official, courtesy of a release CBS Radio just sent out. Slats starts on WNCX on Monday. And as Nathan noted, the news is also now up on the WNCX website.

SLATS TO HOST WNCX MORNING SLOT

“Returns to Cleveland airwaves after 6 year hiatus”

CLEVELAND, OHIO - 98.5 WNCX…Cleveland's Classic Rock today announced the return of Tim Slats to the Cleveland airwaves beginning Monday, November 7th. Slats can be heard on-air weekdays 5:30 to 10:00AM, streaming on-line at www.wncx.com and on select mobile devices through the Radio.com App.

“We are excited to have Slats as a member of the WNCX team. His love of Classic Rock and knowledge of Cleveland made him the obvious choice for the position” commented Bill Louis, WNCX – Program Director.

Slats, a 29 year veteran in the radio industry spent the past six years in the Orlando market where he most recently served as midday host on rocker WHTQ-FM.

“I feel lucky to be back in Cleveland,” said Slats. “It’s a great opportunity to be working at such a heritage Classic Rock station.”

Great news! Glad to see one of the "good guys" getting another shot over in the Halle Building. This is a much better fit for him than his first run was - audience is a lot more in tune with Slats' brand of radio.

Slats was the lone cool radio personality in the building when I worked over there, so I'm glad to see him get another run at it.

And that's a third thing that WNCX has got to like: he's not Maxwell. :D

Anyhow, now that we're at the midway point of Slats' first week on 98.5, how's he sounding?

Honestly from what I've heard he isn't on the air very much. The mornings have remained very music oriented, he comes on to do some segues and start/stop sets, but its very quick hitting. He's said some funny stuff, but its almost as if they've told him "okay, you can talk, but not for more than 30 seconds at a time." Its his first week so maybe he is still just settling in. He has a track record of doing some very entertaining radio here in Cleveland, so it will be interesting to see what he does in the next 6 months at WNCX.
