WNDA Radio New Albany

While checking around the dial yesterday (Sun., 6/1) I heard what was formerly WWSZ-AM 1570 ID'ing and running promos as "News/Talk 1570, WNDA." They ran an (Bill) O'Reilly Radio Factor promo as well.

(Just what local radio needs...more neo-con right wing half truths, spin and pointless blather. Where are the true conservatives?)

But I digress...back on topic...anybody have any details about this change? Will Sporting News radio continue to fill the uncommitted time?

I was listening to Glenn Beck on my way to work today. I heard the promos also. Looks like he'll be on live 9-12 and Bill O'Reilly 12-2p. That's all I've heard them promote thus far. www.indiana1570.com is still a work in progress.

Anyone know if Pete Boyce still owns it?

Pete owns and it is being LMAed with LP ch 9 the former WVHF now WNDA - TV,
Indiana 9 and now Indiana 1570. It's too bad nobody wants to get audience on AM anymore.
Operators and mangers feel like you have to run talk. Too many talk stations on AM in Louisville.
No one would dare to go out of the box, do research and find if there was a station playing 80s, 70s,
60s and 90's, someone might pull some ratings and beat WGTK, WKRD, WAVG, WLOU, WTUV, WFIA, WLLV, even WLRS, WTFX, WAKY, and WQKC. We would not want to get people listening to AM again now would we. So let's add another talk show and get a 0.5.

That's it! People put talk on so they won't have listeners. Talk is what killed the AM dial! Just ask Rush Limbaugh, who lost any chance he ever had of being in the Radio Hall of Fame when he decided to quit playing records.

A nice MOYL station probably would have torn this market up. We can't have that.. so the people in charge did the right thing and put talk on it so it can't possibly succeed. Whew!

All kidding aside, the station is being run by former Cox and Salem OM David Michaels. It sounds to me like he has a pretty good programming lineup, and he's no rookie. It'll probably be tightly executed with few mistakes on the air. If he can put a sales department together he'll do fine. And he knows enough people in town that he can probably do it.

They did try that blues/jazz format a few years back. Actually, a general interest radio station serving those Indiana counties could have potential. They seem to cover that population well. A dose of pop music, cover local high school sports and live and breathe New Albany, Jeffersonville, and all points north of the Ohio and you just might make payroll.

The blues / jazz format that ran was a joke. It was soul blues that was aied at a black audience. If you're going to do a blues format you need to aim for both black and white.

David was a joy / nightmare to work with. I have all the respect in the world for him but I don't think I could go thru that again.

Good point but who do we blame? Owners or programmers? I think certain music formats (oldies, classic country, motown) sound best on AM.

1450 WAVG Classic Counrty sounded horrible in my opinion. You could barely hear it because the volume was so low. Did they make money?

Do you mean poor signal when you mention volume? 1450's problem was management / programming. Blair is a smart guy with a kickass AM radio voice. But for some reason he let that staion sound sloppy. It was like he didn't care. I didn't work in sales so I can't answer the $$$ quesiton. All I know is that 1450 was a great place to work when Charlie owned it. Ron Chilton, Claude Wayne, Mary Ann Stansbury and a few others made that place a living WKRP. It was wonderful.

Volume as in before Cumulus fixed/repaired the stick. Before the repairs the volume was a whole lot lower than it is now. I'm sure Greg or KY knows what I mean, unless I'm an idiot lol.

There is no doubt it sounds better but at night its still a tough one to tune in. Now, I will say that the local production (minus Blairs stuff) coming out of that place was straight out of WNAS. Douglas Wolverton was another guy with a great AM voice but he always sounded tired and didn't put any energy into his reads. "With the WAV 1450 weather forcazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz." Man I wish I could buy that place.

I've never been in that building and I forget to tune it in, so I don't know. I last tuned it in when Cumulus bought it. It sounded weak, but I was in my office downtown so I didn't pay it much thought. They were playing country that I hadn't heard since I worked at WMPI, which was a LONG time ago.

It sounds like they are doing that, minus the pop music.

They run oreilly's show twice once at noon and again at 4 i wish david would add ed schultz. All i am asking for is one just one liberal talk show one not a whole station. I like o reilly's talk show he is not near as far right as rush and hannity.

Yep, modulation on the station was a bit low. It seemed to improve some when they replace the Harris MW-1 transmitter. I grew up with that music on AM, so with the exception of the modulation, I enjoyed listening to it.

WNDA will succeed for one simple reason. Nobody else is covering southern Indiana unless something big happens. For some reason, WHAS seems to think that the world ends at the Jefferson County line. On the weekends, WHAS' local news coverage is non-existent. Being able to cross pollinate the TV and radio will work out great. They will also be carrying the Colts games. It's an Indiana station, might as well cover Indiana events. However, I don't think of "Indiana" when I hear the call letters. I think "Non-directional"!
