WNDV 92.9 format now also on WDND AM1620

I have been hearing modern pop hits on 1620 at night instead of sports (ESPN).

There is still an ESPN on 1620 in Omaha, and 1620 WDND South Bend Indiana, was also sports until recently.

When did the format change?

For a few weeks I thought I was hearing a Disney somewhere until I heard U93.com mentioned last night.

I see.... hmmm...The Artistic people, oh yes...read the other thread...Haw! I've got a format for them to put on 1620!

;D

I'll be listening to what happens. Thnx.

Hi Tom - Yes, many of us have a format for them but...it is AMP after all...and they know what's best...right??!! Their president has been actively seeking input from the public regarding a format. The South Bend Tribune posted his email address in an article concerning the ESPN/U93 simul switch.

Enjoy your engineering and philosophical insights/perspectives on the various boards!

Sale of two expanded AMs blocked by FCC.

"Two South Bend, IN broadcasters won’t be able to sell their expanded band AM stations as the FCC stands firm on its policy for the signals designed to clean up the dial."

FCC denies deals for paired Indiana AMs

By dseyler on Apr, 3 2013 with Comment 1

"FCC A pair of radio companies broke the rule against breaking up a paired standard band/expanded band set of AM stations when it consummated the sale of only one of the two. Now attempts by both parties to that deal to sell the stations to others have been shot down."

WHLY should lose its license. Because the FCC screwed up I would let them operate for 24 months and then pull the plug.

The FCC cracked down on this one, but they let Clear Channel get away with one of the worst cases of splitting up expanded licenses. They were given 1690 WHTE, which was supposed to replace a station on 810 in Johnston City, IL (southern Illinois). CC owned stations in southern Illinois at the time, but got the brilliant idea of moving 1690 from Johnston City, IL, to the Chicago suburb of Berwyn, IL, & diplex the signal off one of the 4 towers to 1390 WGRB on the southwest side of Chicago. They sold off all their stations in southern Illinois, but never let the new owners know that the station on 810 was attached to the 1690 license that got moved to Chicago. Thanks to the FCC for allowing that sale, the owners of the 810 station was forced to sign off, & lose a station, because they allowed the expanded AM station move to the Chicago market, & is now home to WVON (was WRLL when CC ran it as Real Oldies). In this case, 1690 should have stayed in southern Illinois instead of moving to the Chicago market.

A lot of parties at fault in the Johnson City mess ... Withers for not doing the due dilligence it should have, the FCC for allowing the sale of one of the stations without the other, and CCU for not disclosing the move to Chicagoland.

Sounds like a soap opera; stupidity, incompetence and fraud all wrapped up in 1 radio station.

Looking thru the FCC files on WVON 1690, it was 810 WDDD Johnson City, IL (not Johnston City as I originally posted) that was paired with now WVON 1690 Berwyn, IL. Regardless, it's one of the worst cases where they got split, & caused a station in the Carbondale, IL market to be shut down in the process. So far, CC hasn't sold the station to Midwest Broadcasting yet. Maybe they're expecting problems with a potential sale, due to the split up of the 810 & 1690 licenses. Maybe it's good that Midwest Broadcasting hasn't sold their split broadcasting license (now WRLL Cicero, IL) on 1450, in case they're forced to go back to 1450 (WCEV Cicero, IL is the other split broadcasting license). As for WVON, their ratings haven't gone up at all since moving to 1690 & going back to 24 hours operations.

The record clearly indicate that Withers knew exactly what the situation was with Berwyn and Johnson City. He just thought he could sidestep the FCC's expanded band rules with his lawyer's rather pathetic attempt at a waiver request (which was denied). To clarify, at no time did Clear Channel attempt to hide the move to Chicago. Be it right or wrong, Clear Channel found a legal loophole. In fact, it was that city of license change to Berwyn that forced the FCC to place a mileage limit on such COL moves.
