I grew up in Hobart, next to Portage..and have lived in Chicago since '88.
WNDZ being in Portage and listing Chi as city of license has always amazed and confused me.
They are worlds apart, by attitude, outllook, economics, and tastes.
I realize they serve as an important rimshot for voices that would otherwise have no opportunity to be heard in Chicago.
But having grown up in NW Indiana, I also think I would be upset if I still lived there, and a local outlet that ought to be serving the local community instead was serving Chicago, which has plenty of outlets!

It says Portage is the COL. Business address is Chicago.

Tom, don't be so amazed.

When Hal Munn found that frequency for my partner and I (Annie Antich) it was to be a Merrillville station. In about 1983 or thereabouts, we "got a FABULOUS offer we couldn't refuse" and the buyer moved it to Portage, perfectly ok with the fcc. The owners OFFICE (not the city of license) is Chicago.

That station has a phenominal signal, listenable in Milwaukee.

You can hear WNDZ further north of Milwaukee. Didn't they get a CP for boosting their daytime signal to 20,000 watts? Does WNDZ have an e-mail address? If so, please post it. Thank you in advance.

I like their Spanish program at 4pm Sundays..

Would Northwest Indiana residents actually support a station like WNDZ if it did cater to that area. When I meet people who grew up in a cornfield in NW Indiana and proudly tell me they're "from Chicago" I have my doubts.

The "Calumet Region " (old term for that area) supported WJOB well for alot of years. Lots of its residents now are a bedroom community for Chicago, aren't they? WNDZ WORKS very well as the brokered station it is.
