WNEG-AM

Went to the Amtrak station in Toccoa this week. And there across the street is the studio location for WNEG. What a refreshing and hopeful surprise. I knew that Mr Sutton had increased the power on this full service station at 630khz...but never would have imagined how well laid out, and compelling the station is to not only listen to, but to see. A storefront street level studio outfitted with a real well equipped studio, and (what was that in the window?)...a real..LIVE PERSON, RUNNING THE STATION!

Just the type of operation us old dinosaur radio types envision when the thoughts of owning a local radio station cross our minds. Just amazing!

The station runs LOCAL content, and talks about community topics, and plays non offensive music..the commercials are well produced, and overall WNEG should be the defacto example of a well operated AM station in a smaller market...and I would assume that Art's company is actually making money with this terrific station. The community loves them, the station loves the community. No losers here. His operations in Clayton, GA, Franklin, NC, and Sylva, NC are also following this template. Local sports..involvement with the local merchants, and chambers of commerce..and a direct connection with the listeners who HAVE a reason to listen to local radio..

In an industry where the trend is to just barely keep the transmitter on to keep from losing the license, and program the whole outfit with an off the shelf Walmart computer, and no other involvement..these stations are the welcome exception.

The voice of "W onderful N orth E ast G eorgia" is certainly a diamond in the rough. WNEG is a good example of being community-focused. All of Art's stations go by the same standards from Elberton, GA all the way up to Sylva, NC. Too bad a lot of radio operators (especially in the bigger markets) don't understand that being community oriented is what will be key to local radio's survival in the future.

I have spoken before of my friendship with Art and how we go back farther than either one of us would like to admit. He has forgotten more about radio than me or most of the "professionals" clogging up the industry now all put together. A tip of the hat to him for another class operation from a fellow WOGA'er.

The industry today seems oblivious of the fact that radio is a local medium. One size does not fit all. Programming ought to fit the market; the market cannot be cut & pasted to fit to the programming. Any time anyone tries the latter, he usually finds he has very few listeners who are quick to abandon his station.

IMHO local news and sports are "cookie cutter" in the local level. The one thing that almost all successful small market operations have is a good local news.* If I was running small market operation I would always have good local news and sports.

* I am sure somewhere in this country there is a successful community minded station without local news and or sports. I just have not heard of it.
