WNEG files for 5000 watts on 630

WNEG Radio in Toccoa has filed to increase it's power from 500 watts daytime to 5000 watts on 630. The population covered by the predicted primary contour will increase from 247,000 to 1.1 million. WNEG has a pending application to increase nighttime power to 220 watts from its present 44 watts and install a two-tower directional system for the nighttime power increase. Daytime 5KW will remain non directional. WNEG celebrates it's 50th anniversary in 2006.

Good move for WNEG, if the FCC can approve it. At least that station can potentially reach more listeners. Oh, and happy anniversary to WNEG Radio, too!

"As the last emotionally charged note of the Star Spangled Banner subsided, a hush fell over the crowd. Owner Art Sutton christened "Big Bubba", the station's new transmitter, by breaking a bottle of vintage Dom Perignon' across a miniature, symbolic model of WNEG's tower, positioned just outside the door of the tranmitter building. With that, station founder Roy Gaines, dressed in a gold lame' suit for the occasion, slowly and methodically walked through the door, reached over and pressed the big, red button that engaged the high voltage relays on the big 5kw rig. With a buzz and hum, electric lights dimmed all over town. WNEG was now operating at 10 times its former power, which more than quadrupled its coverage. The applause from the crowd was sedate and respectful, like that experienced during the playing of the Masters. Even Otto McDonald was grinning from ear to ear. In Toccoa, Georgia, Irving R. Levine on the Monitor Beacon. This is N B C...the National Broadcasting Company" <P ID="signature">______________
