WNEG power increase

AM 630-WNEG in Toccoa has increased transmitting power from 500 watts days to 5000 watts. The station will officially launch the ten fold power increase Wednesday, April 21st at 5:30 p.m. during a Toccoa Chamber of Commerce hosted Open House at the WNEG Studios/Offices in downtown Toccoa. Wednesday is WNEG's 54th anniversary date.

However, the station is operating on 5000 watts Sunday, April 19 and Monday April 20 to test the new transmitter and make sure all is in proper order for Wednesday's ceremony.

Since Toccoa is located on the South Carolina/Georgia state line, some 40% of the station's signal falls in South Carolina. Would appreciate any signal reports from across the Upstate area of South Carolina.

I was wondering about WLET-AM who is (was) co-located on the WNEG tower. I remember Mr. Sutton stating one time that once WNEG went to 5,000 watts that WLET could no longer operate there. I believe WLET went silent around the end of July of last year. I guess my question is does Toccoa Falls College have any plans to put WLET back on the air from another site or is this the end of those legendary call letters for good? I have always had a special fondness for WLET due to fact that I was a fan of Otto McDonald from his days at WELP in Easley, and I remember when he purchased WLET AM & FM back in the late 60's. I used to listen to WLET-FM during the Otto ownership. It had a great signal into SC.

In far northwestern Newberry county, more specifically where I live in the woods, 5 miles north and west of Silvertreet, I can hear WNEG, where at 500 watts I could not. By "regular listener" standards it's not really listenable, but 50,000 watts would take care of that.... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
