WNEW-AM REBORN IN MORNINGSIDE, MARYLAND

The WNEW-AM call letters are going to resurface next month in Washington D.C. on the FM side. The WNEW-AM call letters are now the call signs for the station known as the "Big Talker 1580" as of December 1.

The revived WNEW-AM which serves Morningside, Maryland is a suburb of Washington D.C. and like WNEW which will resurrected next month is also owned by CBS.WNEW-AM will carry syndicated shows which includes, Michael Smerconish, Glenn Beck, Fred Thompson, Lou Dobbs and Dr. Laura.

The WNEW-AM call letters a considered a cultural instition. And to see these call signs outside of New York is a sad state.

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

The first sentence should read, The WNEW call letters are going to resurface on 99.1 FM in Washington, D.C..

With WNEW-AM already being used by CBS ON 1580 in Morningside, Maryland, will the WNEW on 99.1 use the FM suffix when they go on the air next month?

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

If 1580 keeps the WNEW(AM) calls, then 99.1 will have to be WNEW-FM, though they can
"call" themselves anything they want to except when giving the legal ID once an hour.

I can confirm that I have already heard AM 1580 identifying themselves as "WNEW-AM, Morningside, Washington, DC" at the top of the hour.

I thought WNEW is on 107.9?

The AM station ALWAYS takes top priority if a callsign is shared between an FM and a TV station, and thus never needs an "-AM" suffix.

It's always been the case with the FCC since, well, forever.

CBS is known for shuffling call letters of value around to placeholder stations.

In this case, the WHFS calls now reside in West Palm Beach, on a CHR that is otherwise known as "B106.3" (it had the WJBW calls before becoming a placeholder for WNEW).
