WNEW at 94.7 or 106.7

Radio Business Report has an interesting article on the differences in signal of WNEW and WTOP:

My question: I wonder if CBS ever considered moving Fresh to 99.1 and debuting WNEW on 94.7 as it has a signal comparable to WTOP, but Fresh at 94.7 would have too much of an overlap with co-owned WWMX. Same thing would happen if WNEW were on 106.7 and WJFK on 99.1: WJFK would compete with co-owned WJZ-FM.

CBS probably figures they can get enough slice of the pie from both Washington and Baltimore to make a go of it on the Bowie stick.

Interesting that the old WLZL on 99.1 had a higher quarter hour share than full DC signal WIAD.

They may also have it on a signal like 99.1 to see where the station might do best. If it doesnt do well in Washington, but does well in Baltimore, don't be surprised if it shows up on a Baltimore signal soon. Ditto with DC...I'd guess 94.7 would be the choice. The benefit is they can test-market news in two markets for the price of one. So they may not be looking for all-out defeat of WTOP on there. If one market reacts better ratings-wise, I think they will get the local news station in the end.

Makes a lot of sense; even if they dent WTOP's number just a bit, or like you say, it depends on where they show up better in the book. They may do better than TOP with Baltimore commuters heading down I-95 or the BW Parkway into DC. If needed they could also drop in a translator in either DC or Baltimore for any signal problems as the 60dbu goes over both cities.

I heard the official sign on today and it sounds very good (imho); sounds professional, almost like they've been around for awhile. I wish them well; I think media plurality / competition (especially when it comes to news) is a good thing.

I should make a correction to my original post as I mentioned 'Fresh at 94.7' would overlap WWMX; I meant to say 'Fresh at 99.1.'

106.7 has signal problems too (because of co-owned WWMX at 106.5). If CBS wants full-market DC coverage, it has to be on 94.7 or 95.5.
