WNEW-FM Traffic on The Ones?

I'm confused on some of WNEW-FM's choices for its news wheel, its hourly schedule.

Why put Traffic on The Ones? I know that WINS NYC does Traffic on The Ones. But they never intend to run CBS News on the hour. WCBS has that. I assume someday, CBS hopes WNEW-FM will be doing well as the CBS affiliate contract runs out with WTOP.

For that matter, why didn't WNEW-FM go with a 20 minute news cycle, as WINS, if they're copying WINS? If you tune into an All-News station after :05 or after :35, you probably won't listen long enough to hear the top stories of the hour. If it takes you only 15 or 20 minutes to drive or eat your breakfast or whatever, you won't hear what everyone will be discussing. At least with a 20 minute cycle, if you tune in 5 minutes late, you'll get the top stories in 15 minutes.

I also don't understand why they won't match WTOP for airing Sports News and Business News. Nearly all CBS News stations, as well as WTOP, do Sports at :15 and :45, Business at :25 and :55. Both WINS and WCBS NYC do that, even though at one time they were competitors. If those are the times Washington radio listeners are used, why make them learn something new for 99.1?

I hope WNEW-FM is making some progress. I'd be disappointed if they didn't succeed and all those people got laid off, such as what happened a few weeks ago with Merlin Media's FM News stations in NYC and Chicago.

Well WNEW-FM is trying to replicate how KYW-AM, WBZ-AM do all news and put it in the DC Market without being accused of being tacky that WINS is sometimes is.

Well, WBZ does Traffic on the Threes. That gives them time to runs CBS News on the hour overnight, then Traffic on The Threes can follow the network news.

If WNEW-FM ever gets the rights to CBS News, they'd either have to move their traffic reports. Or never run the network newscast. CBS is very proud of the quality of its network news. I still think they're still the best, even though they've lost a number of affiliates through the years to Fox, after Clear Channel made a deal to affiliate all their Talk stations with Fox.

It's true that a few CBS All-News stations do not run CBS News on the hour, a practice left over from their days as Westinghouse stations: WINS NYC (which can't, due to WCBS), KYW Philadelphia and WBZ, which runs CBS News overnight during talk shows but not in the day during the All-News hours.

But I just don't understand how today's WNEW-FM management can decide to preclude use of CBS News on the Hour in the future, by putting Traffic on The Ones.

Well WTOP-FM is still in contract to Carry CBS News on the hour for now.

It would not make good business sense to move CBS Radio Network over to WNEW. Right now WTOP has to clear all of the CBS Radio Network commercials. With WTOP's ratings, that is a big contributor to the national clearance of the commercials resulting in higher rates.

WNEW is affiliated with ABC Radio Network and seems to be doing okay. ABC seems to do a good job. I was leery about ABC, but after listening to them on WNEW and All News 106.7 in Atlanta, I am as comfortable with ABC as I am with CBS.
