WNEW sinks to a new low

Following their ratings, WNEW has achieved a new low in programming.

Three weeks ago WKTU debuted a new feature with Broadway Bill Lee called "Back in the Day." It has Bill featuring music and information from specific years and is a lot of fun and very innovative programming.

Last week, WNEW's morning disaster rips off the feature with Joe Causi's Back In The Day.

It's obvious that they have no original ideas on that channel, but have they no shame? What's next goofy phonecalls called Causi-busters?

Doesn't NYC, the biggest radio market in the country deserve something better than a low-budget ripoff of the best dance music station in the country?

Shame shame shame on WNEW, Causi and his cackling co-host.

If I could only get my hands on that signal, I'd love to show people what innovation and creativity could do for listenership.

Hey Ray,

I have not heard this because I find their morning show unlistenable, lame and just a waste of time. The most idiotic part of what MIX is doing is the copying of KTU.

Every programmer with a half a brain knows that trying to confuse the cume by copying always benefits the leader in the fight and in this case it would be KTU. So, if I were a KTU staffer, I would be happy to see MIX copying me. It is a form of flattery, but in the end it only works to KTU's advantage.

Just to set the record straight, Mix was doing this a few
days before KTU, so that would mean KTU ripped off MIX.
So how low would that make KTU?

>Let's lay the BS card aside - radio is a passion of mine and there is not much going on that I dont listen to (yes, I know I need a hobby, but I work long hours and need something to keep me occupied) - MIX was NOT doing this before KTU. Broadway Bill Lee was doing Back in the Day for weeks before MIX started it with the morning show. It's bad enough MIX tries to copy KTU's format, but now copying their ideas, please! It's just pathetic!

You are wrong! KTU started on Monday January 16th.
Mix started on the 12th. You should pay closer attention.
They are a little different.
KTU does a whole hour where Joe does just one song.

If that is true, then KTU will benefit from the theft. BUT, it seems that KTU was the originator. I wonder if either station reads this and will respond?

The reality is...

NONE OF THESE STATIONS SHOULD BE DOING THIS!

These are both dance oriented stations, and whatever demo they are trying to reach...their product is DANCE MUSIC and should be very little outside it....especially anything ROCK oriented (R&B is marginally acceptable).

This is why the dance music community is concerned that we just might be losing ONE or BOTH these stations. Copying after one another is virtually making these stations "implode" right in front of our eyes.

Radio guys probably read this but are powerless to do anything because the powers that be over these companies (read managment, sales dept.) just want to see the money based on the demos and DON'T CARE WHAT goes on with what is played. That's the bottom line.

Yet in the process, it is hurting dance music fans.

I don't trust NEW - KTU needs to improve.

This sort of reminds of Tampa Bay back in the early 90s. They had a long time number one in the form of Q105 (with Scott Shannon doing mornings). Scott went to Z100 and the Q remained in the #1 spot with them treading between an AC during the day and a top 40 at night.

Power 93 came on the air as a Rhythmic Top 40 and blew the doors off Q105. After several months of brutal beatings in the Arbs, they (Q) switched to Rhythmic (Q105 Jamz).

Though Q105 actually became a better station than Power 93, there was a grass-roots movement to continue with Power because Q could not be trusted to remain with the new format due to their Top 40/AC format history.

A few months later, Q105 went Country.

I think you have a similar situation with NEW. If KTU goes off the air, NEW will probably switch to AC.

I would suggest to hang in there with the legendary KTU.

With that being written, however KTU really needs to improve. I tried listening today and a couple of weeks ago and I switched away quickly. It seems to me that they are still doing too many of the same things they did 3 years ago, 5 years ago...

How many times can you listen to Shannon's "Let the Music Play"? The song was great in its time, but sheesh!

On the other hand, I'm glad Joe Causi and Paco are on the air in NYC. I sent an email to XM's Chrome to see if they could get Paco to host a Saturday night mix show. The person whom responded asked who Paco was. I guess the XM employee must have been 13 years old and from Utah. Oh well.

I can't stand the Mix morning show. The worst is the "Morning Quickie" at 7:45am. If you haven't heard it consider yourself lucky. Basically a man or woman calls his/her signifcant other and tries to lure him/her home from work for a "quickie". That's the last thing I want to hear about at 7:45am.

Unless you work for them, actually sitting there and listening to the Mix morning show thoroughly enough to know the date is scary... I find that a hard show to sit through and I haven't quite figured out why. I don't know if its the flow, or the music or what, but as someone who flips all around the dial in commute, thats one I rarely stop on.

I don't know who used "Back in the Day" first, I'd say KTU has been more of the let's go back in the day over the years... beyond Broadways latest segment. It makes sense for KTU, seeing as though they play new and old... Shouldn't a "classic" dance station always be "back in the day." Well despite the fight over who did what first, the KTU version is just better prepared, delivered and long enough that you get in the mood, but not too long that they are away from the format forever... <P ID="signature">______________
