WNIO 1370 drops Standards

Hi Folks:

Went to WNIO 1370 (www.wnio.com) and they have dropped the "Americas Best Music" format and now are sports talk as "The Animal".

Too bad. Although not an excellent station, it was still pretty good.

Mike

Actually the DG format was on 600 WSOM in the market, and they also flipped to News/Talk. So the market lost both of its standard formatted radio stations.

On Tuesday, March 22nd 1570 WHTX licensed to Warren, OH will fill the standards/soft AC format hole in the Youngstown market. It will be known as Fabulous 1570 WHTX "Youngstown's Original Hits"

The format change was originally to happen several months ago but per their Twitter page, they weren't able to get out of their contract with the Classic Top 40 format on the station now. Thanks for the update. I've heard they will use the Dial Global Adult Standards format.

1250WTAE is correct... sign-on happened yesterday, and it is indeed "The Lounge" as "Fabulous 1570." This feed is also used on WLEC in Sandusky. The stream is up at the old webste www.1570theblizzard.com.

"The Lounge" leans even more toward soft AC than Dial Global's America's Best Music, and seems to be a mix of "new standards" and '60s-'80s AC cuts, kind of like a WDUV-type format but with the "new standards" where the more uptempo rock oldies WDUV plays would be. It's fine for my musical taste though I would have liked to see some more older music played, but I don't imagine it will be vchimp's cup of tea, and many former WNIO listeners may not like it either since WNIO played a lot of the older stuff too.

Good sounding station, great sounding local production. The classic Top 40 was good too. To my knowledge it was the only station streaming the format with Zippo In The Morning. Good luck and congratulations on a job well done. Mitch Craig also does an excellant job on the liners, nice touch.

I've spent some time this weekend listening to The Lounge programming on Fabulous 1750 (WHTX) and must say I like it. It is very similar to DG's Adult Standards, but does manage to come across as "more local" when the jocks are heard. The station is a work in progress, but the programming would suit anyone who's a fan of America's Best Music.

I'd even venture to say at this point that I prefer it to ABM, but that's probably because of the "freshness" of some of the songs I've heard. Still, it seems like a 3-to-1 ratio in favor of music that you hear on ABM. As far as leaning more toward soft AC, I could be wrong, but it sounds like this format probably steers clear of some of the more unusual "head scratchers" on America's Best Music (ie, Blood Sweat & Tears and the Guess Who). But I can't find a playlist online yet (WHTX doesn't show up on yes.com nor does it have a playlist on its site). Would be interesting to see an official one and research the music more carefully.

I'm sure there are plenty of others, but the only artist I've heard on The Lounge that I haven't heard on ABM is Tony Desare.

I'm not sure this is the same format, but I heard somewhere that they play "You Can Do Magic" by America, which I wouldn't care for. This could be another Dial Global format, though.

I wouldn't want a format that doesn't include the older songs. I remember in its final days, Timeless Favorites went through two stages. At one point they had a lot of standards, but they were mostly the newer performances. I wasn't entirely happy with that, but the format had other problems. Then they seemed to only play old songs.

They do play a lot of Sinatra, Bennett, Mathis and others. After listening to the stream off and on for a week, I'll say that there are several contemporary artists covering standards that receive play on this format, including Desare, Queen Latifah and Peter Cincotti. Of course, they also play a lot of Michael Bublé and Diana Krall.

There doesn't seem to be as much 70s AC as with ABM. But Lounge definitely plays more soft AC from the 80s. It's playlist doesn't seem to be quite as large as ABM.

70s AC is better than 80s AC.

It's too bad that so many songs aren't getting played most places. WAVO in Charlotte has such an incredibly large playlist. So many versions of the same songs I've heard before. I had no idea Nat King Cole did versions of so many songs.

This format reminds me of Seattle AC stations in the '80s......
