WNJC 1360 signing off in 30 days

According to a facebook post from their engineer Duke Hamann "WNJC will be going dark in about 30 days. Until then I will be playing a DX test at Midnight EST every night, for 1 hour. This is the Black Coffee DX Test that Les Rayburn created. Sad moment but after 25 years of working on WNJC it may be coming to an end. If the stars align, I may get it back on the air with-in a year otherwise enjoy this last chance to hear WNJC 1360 AM from Washington Twp, NJ.

well if they filled a format void, instead of whatever they were/are running they might of had a chance. I remember years back Mr. Forsythe, Gus Crawley, Bob Charger and myself were running a classic country (55-75) format, known as W N ew J ersey C ountry and had many listeners and advertisers in the blue collar area the main lobe covered, then some know it all's came in and started changing the format to R&B, ethnic and that was it....

Obviously the classic country started not to maker money, if it ever did..... and brokered time is often easy money, not as much effort or overhead to make the money..... and i cant blame them, this is a business afterall, you seem to forget that

It doesn’t matter what you put on it. Unfortunately, nobody is interested in listening to a low-powered, high on the dial noisy AM station. If the owner can get some sucker to buy/lease it…good for them. Otherwise, turn in the license unless someone has some money to burn.

You may be able to generate some interest in a suburban Philadelphia AM station, but not one with 4 towers.

It looks like in 2016, they were permitted to temporarily run a maximum of 290 watts ND day, 43 watts ND night on a 148 foot tower. So it might still fit as a minimal 250 watt ND, but I don't know that a buyer could find land for an AM tower in 2023.

Wasn't sure which of the 6 Washington NJs this was about...They need to rename them. We got Washington Township surrounded by Washington Borough in Warren County not far from Washington in Morris County and Township of Washington in Bergen County. Too many. Don't get me started on Franklins...

It’s actually Washington TOWNSHIP, Gloucester County, about 15 miles outside Philadelphia. At one time they were running a MOR format that also featured big bands and singers from the 40’s up to the 70’s. It filled a format hole that was vacated by the demise of WPEN. It would probably still do well with some local programming like high school football and basketball, and talk. Too bad.

Update from WNJC's engineer. When asked for an update, he wrote saying "the station is off the air currently. The transmitter needs some repair. Hopefully going to fix it before I store it and be able to do a few tests before disconnecting it for good. Feb 7 is our last day we can be on the air."

Looks like WNJC will be gone for good after Feb 7th.

I’m sorry to hear that WNJC is going (or has gone) dark. I worked for John Forsythe at WNJC and WIFI 1460 (they programmed WIFI under an LMA) in the mid to late 90’s. They were just starting to do a brokered programming format at that time. I was playing Oldies at night on WNJC and playing Oldies in the morning on WIFI. It was a great place to get your start on the commercial band back then. Eventually Jerry Blavat (God rest his soul) ended up on ‘NJC for several years. I think the challenge for that station was its dial position and signal. Nevertheless, I’m sorry to see it go.

What years were you at WNJC? I got there around 95/96.

WNJC renewed their license in May 2022. Their most recent FCC filing is from 2018 when their ground system got damaged due to theft and vandalism and they couldn't afford to fix it.

How does this station not have an FM translator? So many local AM stations (even those that are sitting in the middle of a cornfield) that otherwise would have gone dark have extended their lifespans by obtaining an FM signal. Add that to the fact that WNJC has the distinct advantage of covering a healthy portion of densely populated South Jersey and practically all of Philadelphia and it should be a no brainer that this station could be saved.

It takes about 10 mV/m to be usable in urban areas, and that signal from WNJC ends several miles SE of Woodbur, NJ. There are less than 300,000 persons in the station's 10 mV/m contour, and 440,000 in the 5 mV/m signal area, all in southern/southeastern Gloucester and Camden counties. At night, it covers only about 80,000 persons interference free.

early 1990s Mike V and John F were great people...and Gus (the owl) had great plans but.............................
Does anyone know what ever happened to Joanie Venditti? Was she still involved with the station after Mike’s passing and is she still in the area? She DJ’d oldies for a while there with a soft spoken mellow voice. I thought she sounded pretty good on the radio.

I heard Joan is a Christian author now and lives in Texas. Remarried too I believe

Agreed. When I was there Mike was programming oldies as “Star Sounds Gold”. It was a lot of ‘PGR type music. Good stuff. I used to play it at night on ‘NJC and mornings on WIFI in Burlington County
