WNKO/101.7: Any update?

About a year ago there was some discussion about WNKO/101.7 moving from Newark to New Albany. Is this still a possibility, or has it fallen by the wayside? I was on the air in the market several years ago, and I'm puzzled by the very idea of a move.

When I worked there, the WNKO ownership was very protective if its place in the market, and didn't give a damn about Columbus. Aside from the obvious potential for bigger ad rates, why the change of heart? Is a sale in the works? I can't imagine there's enough room left in Columbus for *another* move-in.

I hope they don't move because it would knock WOBN-FM at Otterbein off the air! This town doesn't need another rimshot station!

WOBN Westerville has applied to move to 97.5 I believe.

They did apply for 97.5 but they'll get drowned out by WBNS and WNCI...if they don't fight it!

Be careful when quoting radio-locator...if you read the website, it's there "for entertainment purposes".

You should not consider this information as detailed, nor as complete as a full engineering study. You would probably find, if you did such a study, more than a few reasons why a station can't be located on those frequencies.

Reason Number 1... 10.7 MHz separation... due to the way receivers are built, you have to protect stations 10.6 or 10.8 MHz up or down the dial.

94.1 + 10.7 = 104.8, so that means 104.9 WCVO could interfere with a station at 94.1

98.5 - 10.7 = 87.8, so that means Channel 6's analog audio would interfere with 98.5

I wouldn't think we are close enough that the co-channel Class B stations in Cinci would cause a problem, but all you would have to do to find out is look up FCC separation tables for co-channel Class B to Class D stations and see if the transmitters are too close together. But the 10.7 thing rules them out anyway, at least as long as Channel 6 and WCVO continue to broadcast...

I am aware of the 10.7 rule, but we are talking about a station less than 30 watts and I didn't think much about it. Also, why would WOBN be forced to move? They are a 'full power' licensed station, not a translator or LPFM secondary service. A move by 101.7 would have to protect them, right?

it states on the application for the move.

"WOBN IS A CLASS D (SECONDARY) NONCOMMERCIAL EDUCATIONAL FM STATION OPERATING ON A NON-RESERVED CHANNEL. THIS APPLICATION IS BEING FILED TO CHANGE FREQUENCY TO ANOTHER NON-RESERVED CHANNEL IN RESPONSE TO BEING DISPLACED BY WNKO." http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/cdbsmenu.hts?context=25&appn=101193854&formid=301&fac_num=50761
