WNKT " The Game" 107.5 update

“I think the biggest difference USC fans are going to hear is the signal,” said Bill McElveen, Citadel Communications vice president for the Southeast region. “At 40,000 watts, WNKT can reach a large portion of the state.”

Er, huh?

LOL. ".... But not as much as B106 or WVOC."

Not real big news. Pretty much confirmed one of the strategies I had figured they would take with the station. The sports were scattered all over only because they would have really soiled up B106 if they had all been on WTCB.

Dirt-ball move of the whole thing was Inner City registering some of the potential domain names around the WNKT launch date. C'mon. Really. It's inevitable that WZMJ will end up doing WCOS-AM like numbers now that someone's doing a darned good job of local sports with the 'Cocks on a full-market FM. Not a big Citadel or Sports radio fan. But I give them props for doing a good job with it. Let's hope they can keep it live and local doing the prime dayparts.

BTW, rumors are that Clear Channel is letting Jonathan Rush talk to other folks in-market. Could he be the "player to be named later" and move over to the Cayce and of Misfit Toys?

Where do you get the idea that WVOC is more powerful than WNKT? I've been in a carwash before on Garners Ferry Rd and not been able to hear a word of VOC.I've had no problems whatsoever picking up The Game...

The thing is that, the people listening near the Charleston area need not get too excited about 107.5 with 107.3 coming to their area. That will surely override 107.5's signal in that area.

Hammer, that's your receiver and your particular location.

WVOC, at daytime pattern and assuming CCU has been maintaining the grounds, produces a near statewide signal during daytime operational hours. Thus, WVOC has a significantly larger coverage area than WNKT. The WVOC pattern schmoos a lot at night to protect WFIL and the 560 in Miami.

I've been impressed so far with the talk shows on WNKT. I recognize many of the voices on the talk shows, I guess some of them are the USC sports broadcasters or work at other Citadel stations.

As for the signal, it's okay, though I do hear a few scratches in the car traveling around Columbia.

Overall, an improvement for basketball & baseball, but definetly a downgrade for football games.

A few questions... what are the call letters? I understand that an AC station in Charleston has taken over The Cat moniker and country format formerly heard on 107.5 in that market, so keeping WNKT doesn't make sense.

And does the station have a website yet? Streaming yet? I suppose they're using the Sporting News network overnights and weekends, since ESPN is already in the market on 93.1 and Fox Sports is on 1400. Geez, all Columbia would need now is an ESPN Desportes affiliate and Columbia listeners could have all four syndicated sports networks!

Do we really think putting sports on a full-power FM signal is the best use of 107.5? I realize that Citidel already had rights to a lot of local teams but does that mean around the U.S. they'll be an FM sports station wherever there's a big university with a big sports effort? Will there be a Sports FM station in South Bend IN or Stillwater OK or Austin TX or State College PA?

I think this tells us how poor a rock market Columbia is. Only two rock stations, one classic rock, one alternative, both on lower powered frequencies, yet Citidel decides the best way to go after young adult men is with all-sports on a 40,000 watt signal.

What he said. 40,000 watts for sports is an absolute waste, considering the number of class A's in the market.

The calls are still WNKT, unless Citadel decides to change them to go with the new format. My hunch is that they are warehousing them for now until they can be transferred to another Citadel property that will use them.

As for the Country station in Charleston, they've decided to relaunch with "The Wolf" moniker (under the WIWF call letters) instead of just moving Cat Country over to 96.9

No website as of yet. WNKT will pick up Fox Sports in January.

In the case of Citadel's Columbia cluster, it was a move to consolidate most of Gamecock sports on one frequency, allowing WTCB (and WOMG) to focus on their regular music formats.

Time will only tell, but this move will cripple 93.1 and kill off "The Team" since 107.5 covers more area. From a personal standpoint, sure I'd wished that 107.5 was launched with something else (anything but Country & Hip-Hop!), but from a business standpoint, this move will benefit them in the long run since the Gamecocks will now be on one FM station.

I've given "The Game" a full week, and I have to tell you, it's one of the best station launches Columbia has ever seen. They obviously have put some serious money into talent. For those who are asking question from outside the market, when the station launches its morning show on the 26th, it will be live and local with two or three-man teams from 6am until 10pm (except for 9am-Noon). Plus, this is one of the biggest billboard campaigns I have ever seen for radio in Columbia. It must be at least a 150 showing, plus a bunch of digital boards.

I think it's a brilliant move. Rather than put on another stale voice-tracked rocker, Citadel put on a quality product that will be a huge revenue winner, and it locks in the Gamecock rights for years to come. On Friday, I was listening to Duce Staley's show and he had Sterling Sharpe right there in studio. Then he said he'd have Donovan McNabb on Monday. Based on the first week's guests, it was like a national show, only it was truly local.

I have a friend in sales at Citadel and they said they already have clients calling in asking to advertise. I was skeptical about this mainly because of how quickly they were launching, but it's pretty obvious someone put some time in to this. There have been minimal problems. Anyone that says this is a waste of 40,000 watts doesn't understand the passion sports fans have for this product. I'm impressed.

I couldn't have said it better Bugz. I typically dont listen to sports talk radio, but I was curious about the new station and I actually find myself listening to it more and more. Although I wish they would have launched a rock format, this will still please many sports fans. What do you guys think will happen to 93.1? I think a nice little Rhythmic AC could work or even smooth jazz.

I thought so too at first, but listening to it I really am impressed by the local coverage. Knowing the people around here, you can't have enough Gamecock coverage and I know a lot of people who are listening.

It really makes sense when you think about it 93.1's signal is weak in Columbia and 1400 is on AM. 107.5 is going to destroy the competition.

Add in all the Gamecocks sports broadcasts and you've got quite a station.

Columbia isn't a sports town. I'd be stunned if 107.5 is still all sports when the college football season rolls around again.

That is insane. Do you know how many advertisers are doing anything they can to associate their product with South Carolina or Clemson?

There are more than enough Gamecock fans, and Tiger fans to support 107.5.

Now if you said, "Columbia isn't a professional sports town" or a "minor league sports town"

I'd agree with those statements.

As far as advertising goes, watch those number drop WAY off once basketball season closes.

I still maintain that overall, Columbia is not a sports town. That doesn't mean USC athletics don't have their fans.

Frankly it is refreshing to have something local on FM so that I don't have to go on line to hear 1400 after certain times of the day considering I live in South Congaree. I think that this station will be around and we just have to give it time and if anyone flips, it will more than likely be 93.1 and or 1400.

In SC, the college sports scene fans are pretty rabid. College football is held in higher regard, and followed fanatically (sp?) the same way, even more so, then some major cities professional sports fans.

Go look at the prices for tickets to USC/Clemson on stubhub.com.

Fans of USC/Clemson are hardcore. And not 'fair weather' at all.

In Chucktown, the sports stations do dang well. What are there? 3? I know any game, Citadel, CSU, USC, Clemson, Panthers, Riverdogs, Stigrays, Green Wave, ect...are on the radio, all the friggin' time. "Tune to our sister station at 8pm for this game, our other sister station, for that game, we have this game coming up" You get it Im sure. Advertisers here seem to love advertising with the sports teams. Im sure its probably the same in Columbia, home of Steve Spurriers USC Gamecocks.

No NFL, MLB, NBA, or NHL teams in SC...but that dont mean the fans dont love and follow the teams they have, like the hardcore sports lovers they are.

Not sure of all the variables with 'the game' but dont doubt fan/advertiser base for a second.

sssSShewtt! Deys gonna be tawlkin 'bout dat dere Tiger/Gamecock foosbawl game 24/7 in da summatime, like it just happend. Or goin' tew.

Just how it is.

Mebbe SC, gets one of them new AAFL football teams I keep hearin' so much about. Probably gonna have a few Gamecocks & Tigers playin' in it.

...for all you foosbawl fans!

Smooth Jazz would have complimented their cluster nicely. 103.1 actually started as Jazz and did nicely for a book or two, as have a lot of start-ups in Columbia. And I have noticed the signal being a little "scratchy" here and there, even on the west side of the river where it should be clear as a bell.

I know everyone has their thoughts about WNKT....but don't forget...this is really about money not formatics....I mean money in McElveen's pocket. He would make a great magician. Smooth jazz with a light AC mix is not far away.........and not on a Citadel Station. Let the real games begin.
