WNLA-FM Indianola now urban AC

I found this out today while in the Delta. It was automated but it didn't sound too bad musically. I had a feeling WNLA's satellited AC format would come to an end soon due to Debut Broadcasting switching WBAQ to soft AC. I thought it would change to some sort of rock format, given the large number of urban-formatted stations already in the Delta. But this is good because WKXI-FM's signal tends to scramble once you get to Yazoo City. Hope things go well for them.
 
Wow! No kidding... Been finding that out. It's a good start for them so far. At least Debut REALLY knows the void that needed to be filled.
 
The question is: Does void = revenue in the Delta? Give it 6 months and let's check the temperature again...O.K. ? Thanks JBI ( AND...you can be sure if I am still round in April 2008, this question will be revived for comments at that time). In the mean time, IMHO, Debut has a plateful. Finis.
 
I did Urban AC in Cleveland for many years. It didn't work. The typical audience for Urban AC (educated people with jobs) doesn't exist in the Delta.

WOW !!!! WHAT A SURPRISE !!!! Another Mississippi FM switching to either Urban , or Soft Soul , or Black Gospel or Hip-Hop !!! Hell , I'd been surprised if it were anything else !
 
But look at the demographics of the cities/markets where these changes are taking place. If african americans are a significant (and in a lot of cases the majority) part of the population it makes sense to serve your audience.
 
I'm going to side with JBI on this one. Give it about six months and then we will see how well they have panned out. I think doing an urban AC format at that frequency would be a hit-or-miss factor. And as for the revenue, we'll see how that goes from there.

Just because you have a predominantly black population, doesn't mean Urban AC will work. Urban AC appears to segment of the demographic that doesn't exist in the Delta. Been there, done that.

Sounds pretty on target to me. Last time I went to the grocery store in Indianola... which was recently, it looked like an Urban AC audience! In fact it looked more Urban AC than Country, that's for sure!!!

I don't think you understand... Here, I'll lay it out for you... Urban AC appeals to blacks that typically have above-average education and better than average paying jobs. Think black stockbrokers or lawyers who drive BMWs. There are few very blacks in the Delta that fit that profile, hence Urban AC is not a viable format in the Delta.

Urban AC appeals to older black listeners (25-54) in general, not just those who are well off, educated and all that. Having worked in the same building as Kiss 104 in Meridian, I can tell you that they had a wide range of listeners and the ratings showed it. Oh, and the agencies loved it too.

Honestly, I like the music too. Nothing wrong with some R&B mixed in with some great blues (like they and the urban AC that URB owns in Starkville do). :)

Having spent many years in Meridian, some of which were spent in the same building you refer to, I can assure you that the Delta is NOT Meridian. It's a different class of people - both black and white. As I said, I tried Urban AC in Cleveland for about 8 years. We had Tom Joyner and The Touch (same lineup as KISS-104 had at one time), but it did not work in the Delta. It was "too cool for the room."

Well, I notice that what must be the premiere broadcast property in the Delta, WABG-TV, just sold for 5.1 million. Considering that their capital assets have to be higher than that (with a 2000 ft tower, two state of the art transmitters and two owned studios) this is rather shocking, considering that established stations in smaller markets usually go for much more. Apparently, being the lowest income area in the US, with no prospects for improvement, makes for a very poor broadcast market.
 
Very astute observation, and reflects exactly what LF has been trying to tell those programmers that probably have never spent a night in the Delta. I am proud to say I was born there ( A l o n g time ago), and just as proud to no longer be in business there. Cheers...JBI
 
A UHF in Meridian (WMDN-Ch. 24) just sold for more money than WABG. That alone illustrates some of the difference betwen Meridian and the Delta.

Batesville is NOT the Delta?? Kind of a stretch don't think, J. Boyd? It was when I lived there. On the eastern frindge, granted. But still the Ms. Delta. But have no fear, the Delta will rise again...just not in our lifetimes. :-\
 
Bottom line... are there hills? If so, it's not in the Delta*.

*excluding Indian mounds, Levees, your mileage may vary
 
What is the Delta? Not just a place, but a way of life and a special mindset...thankfully, in my opinion, Batesville does not qualify
on the latter two.
