WNNW-AM 800 And WNSH-AM 1570 Separately Programmed

When Costa-Eagle bought WNSH-AM 1570 a couple of months ago, it appeared that they were just interested in enlarging the WNNW footprint over the north shore and coastline. But, as I first noticed just this past Sunday, each station is now broadcasting SEPARATE Spanish-language programming, although both feature mass-marketed recorded marerial en Espanol. Maybe somebody out there who understands Spanish, and Spanish-language radio can tell the difference. WNSH has to compete with a lot of Spanish-language AM stations in and around Boston; there must be an additional expense involved with this step....and the EAGLE component of Costa-Eage is the Eagle Tribune "newspaper", which just laid off even more employees. That's why I put the word "newspaper" in quotation-fingers. Not many reporters left.

The Eagle-Tribune has a sister paper in Salem (the News) btw and they too were hit by layoffs

The 800 signal does fairly well even in the North Shore at least by day so maybe they can afford to run sep. programming, not just a simulcast of WNNW, on 1570 (even the 92.1 simulcast can push further than you'd think--was getting it in Danvers once).

I believe that it's directional toward the southeast although a satellite of a station licensed to Lawrence. I've observed billboards inside Lawrence for the 92.1 signal, but not in Methuen or Haverhill.

And at one time I saw a billboard for "Power 800" on Canal St. in Salem (MA). Of course those who read the Eagle Tribune will see mentions of news events in "Salem" but it refers to Salem NH;
they would have to add "Mass." to distinguish the Witch City. (Similarly I can remember in the days of WCGY Lawrence you'd hear an ad for a business in "Salem" but they'd mean Salem NH!)

Power 800AM/92.1 FM are being programmed apart from 1570 AM - Viva 1570 is more of a Spanish AC format, while Power is much more upbeat, CHR type format. Both are being operated out of studios at 462 Merrimack Street in Methuen.

As for billboards for Power - there was a time when Costa/Eagle had boards promoting Power 800 throughout the Valley, including one just up the road from their studios on Route 110 and at least two in Haverhill (one just outside Lafayette Square and one coming down Washington St towards the Basillere Bridge).

Say what you will about Costa/Eagle, but as for any sort of "competition" in this market when it comes to Spanish language programming, he has seen more so-called "competition" come and go and yet, he's still standing when all is said and done. Probably stronger and smarter as a result of all that so-called "competition" as well.
