WNNW

WNNW 800 Lawrence seems to be running daytime power at night, I can tell immediately because during the day on a broadband
radio such as a GE Superadio they splatter down the dial and show up under WRKO 8 miles from their Andover site, it goes away
when they reduce to 230 watt night power....well lately at night its no longer going away, splattery trash 24 hours a day

That's interesting; I live pretty close to the WNNW tower, and not only does it NOT interfere with WRKO-AM 680, I can pick up WABC-AM 770 in NYC and WCRN-830 in Woostah after dahk. (OK, I'll stop with the NE Dialect now). I reported elsewhere that co-owned WCCM-AM 1110 COL Salem, NH was off-the-air for a couple of days after the storm; it's now back on-the-air (returned Wednesday morning BEFORE 7:30 am) . I haven't been able to catch its actual sign-on time for the past two days, nor its sign-off (which should be 5:30 EDST) but last month it stayed on until 7:30 pm EDST. WCCM has had a history of seemingly unauthorized pre-sunrise and post-sunset operation well into the wintah, I mean winter.

That part of Andover was without power for quite a while. Maybe the transmitter remote control was not working. Or maybe the station had authority to stay on with full power because of the "state of emergency". I remember that during the Blizzard of '78 even WCAS in Cambridge was on the air at full power until midnight and they announced that it was with FCC approval because of the emergency conditions. I live about 4 miles away from WNNW and I did notice that the HD icon on my radio was illuminated at night on WNNW when it usually isn't. I wondered about that.

Day power for this emergency is a pretty lame excuse as 230 watts more then covers any Hispanic areas that may have been affected by the storm.
When WCCM was on 800 playing standards I listened to them with no problems south to Woburn, west down 495 well past Westford and east to Amesbury at night.
It's amusing that after this was posted power is down tonight, In the past this company has played by their own rules according to several contract engineers
who serviced the stations, At times I would hear 1110 on at night till 11:00PM to cover night games. I wish I still had my Potomac AM field strength meter, I would watch them like a hawk

That owner has a total disregard for any rules. He has a more powerful transmitter than his license for WNNW. He regularly turns up the power on both day and night as well as his translator. He has been doing so for years. This information comes from someone that works with him and watches him do it regularly.

Between guys like this and pirates doing whatever they want it's not a surprise that most legitimate stations that follow the rules struggle to survive.

Are you reading this FCC?
