WNOK And then there was one

I heard that WNOK let all their parttime talent go. If this is true, that means that the morning show is the only live daypart left on the station. That's really hard to imagine. Back when they had Rush, McKay, Summers and Thrills, that was great radio. Now, it's all tracked. I would have never believed this.

If it's true, that is stunning. Pretty much speechless here.

If I had my druthers, we'd have live folks all the time on XRY.

WOW!!! I am shocked yet not surprised at the moves CC is making... They are trying to keep the bottom line as low as they can yet at the same time killing off any chances of young and talented people that just maybe could make it to the big show... If it continues at their other sister stations I look for CC Columbia to go up on the auction block... To Clear Channel Heritage does not mean a thing anymore... What clear Channel does not realize is WNOK is Columbia just like DM and COS... They have been there forever and people look to those stations as their place to turn to... To CC they feel people will not know the difference in VT'ing, but I hate to tell Clear Channel "People Are Not As Stupid As They Think". There have been some very good people who have come through NOK... Scott S. Thrill, TJ, Robyn King, and a host of other who have gone on to bigger and better things... I am sure that in some board room Clear Channel and it's stock holders are gloating with the fact we have just saved even more money, but it will come back to bite Clear Channel in the ass... Remember all of those over priced stations Clear Channel bought!!! Maybe there is a reason they are not getting a good return in their investment... It is called a crappy product... In about two or three years I plan on selling my house I will make more money off of it than I did when I purchased it WHY because I take care of it... How does this equate to radio??? If you take care of your talent, your advertisers, and all of the other aspects of the biz you will be rewarded with a nice Return in your sale... Sorry I am so long winded, but I hate to see stations being destroyed by people who don't even care about the community they serve not much less the employees who have put them where they are today... I will get off my soap box for now, but let me assure you that I will not go quiet into that good night... CC1

:'(

When the corporate game started Clear Channel had the resources to really change radio for the better. They had the means to hire the best talent, offer the best technology and really give small markets the large market taste. They blew it! They tasted the dollar and it went to hell from there. Not only did they run off the best talent, they cut staff to almost nothing, voice tracked the off prime shifts where new talent was grown and essentially ran anyone off who gave a crap about the industry. Now this industry we love is run by button pushers and no talent bean counters who are awarded more by shaving dollars and trimming fat than by innovation and creativity. There are PD's out there who have never cued a record, cleaned a cart machine head or heard of Wolfman Jack. Scary huh? And I'm not THAT old. We're not even going to discuss they don't know that Alice's Restaurant is a song or what hitting a post means.

I hold hope radio is like mother nature and has a self correcting possibility. You know, that phenomenon that keeps **** roaches, sharks and evil from ruling the world. I'd be thrilled if it had a little Karma. Let the rich, power hungry radio vampires keep their money and give us out industry back. It isn't just the jocks. The sales people are leaving in droves too.

Who will be left? No talent, no sales, not a soul left who loves music or appreciates the industry? They're running out of people to shove off. Hopefully there will be one person left who can operate that laptop and stand to look at themselves in the mirror. Shame. I hope some of the talent would come back if the situation changed.

I know my LPFM station is on auto pilot most of the time but if I had at least 6k and could afford it my station would be run the old fashion way. I couldn't agree more that talent is something you respect and hold on too. If CC falls like a house of cards with no main support left little by little then they have no one to blame but themselves, I just hope good radio can be rebuilt out of whats left.

This is the norm all over. 99.9 KISS Country in Asheville has done that for a long time. Also CC! Live morning show...VTed from 10AM on!

If we are not careful, WCOS is going to be the same way and they are almost there with the only live shows with morning drive and afternoon drive. Everything else is tracked and it shows.

Guess What?
When WNOK-FM switched to Top 40 in late 76, they were running tapes. Yes, tapes, except for the morning show. Guess it's kind of gone full circle now.

And NOK-FM was a terrible sounding station then-not near as good as WNOK-AM at that time. I remember wondering how Cola could have such a awful top 40 on FM. It took years for NOK to start sounding decent....

You are correct, sirs....they ran the Drake-Chenault reels. Remember the days of "America's Number 1 Radio Station...Live on Stereo 105"?

Question (since the subject had been brought up)?

When WNOK-FM went live around (I think) 1980, did they switched the airstaff from the AM over to FM? Or was the AM staff gone by the time WNOK-AM became WXAP (the dreaded "Zap 123").Interesting that they were using Drake-Chenault service as I've assumed that they were using TM's "Stereo Rock" format. When I've dubbed some stuff from WNOK's jingle archives about 10 years ago, I did find some voice tracks from TM.

I'm disappointed that I couldn't find information about WNOK or WCOS from the late 70s-early 80s time period while I was going through both "The State" and "Columbia Record" archives. Were both newspapers anti-radio in their reporting since they are "competitors"?

Robyn

If I recall correctly, the air staff at the FM side was somewhat different than the WXAP staff and if I also remember correctly, WXAP went from disco to country for a while as well.

Those were not Drake-Chenault tapes on WNOK-FM in the 70's, they were Century 21. WZLD was running Drake stuff, however.
Interesting side note about how WNOK-FM sounded in the 70's. When the station went Stereo (sometime prior to Top 40), they had two telco lines running from the station to the transmitter...one for left channel, one for right channel...They went through completely different Southern Bell systems. One channel went through 5 points which is prone to flooding. When it rained, the vu meters looked pretty interesting, and the audio was....well................you can imagine.....

I could be mistaken. I worked at both places when they still had the remnants of automation gathering dust. Regardless, neither service had compelling announcers. I'll never forget, "...that was Barbra Streisand, coupled with Fleetwood Mac," or, "...on the way, Barry Manilow, paired with Andy Gibb". At least VT'ing isn't that bad..much.

Cheap Channel has a history of using out of town announcers to do its voice tracking. WCOS is a great example of that as well as Kiss FM in Asheville.

All but the midday guy, who is the PD. Nights and PM Drive are from Charlotte.

I don't know about the weekends, but last I listened in, there seemed to be at least one or two local folks voicetracking. I had been told that all parttimers had been fired a while back, though.

When I listen to the guy doing PM Drive, the only thing I ever hear him say is... "<insert artist's name here> is on 'NOK"

"Chris Brown is on 'NOK"
"Matchbox Twenty is on 'NOK"
"Kanye West is on 'NOK"

You'd think he could voice track it in 10 minutes at that rate.
