WNOK

WNOK if I remember correctly had the old WLTX calls... Neil I agree with you 100% right now they are no ok and it is pretty bad, but I have given my thoughts... You get what you deserve... CC1

Your brain is better than mine. After a weekend of St. Patricks day, pre-St. Patrick's day, and some moving, my synapses need rest.

Back in the day it was WNOK AM/FM/TV. I don't know exactly when Channel 19 split off. 25's predecessor was WCOS-TV. It went dark, however, so WOLO has no direct relation.

Thank Mendel Rivers for screwing Columbia out of prime TV allotments.

Yes, WNOK-TV 19 split off from WNOK-FM/AM in 1977, becoming WLTX (the calls letters stand for "L"ewis "T"elevision, the former owners).

Now, I was wondering about WNOK's call sign. I was told that it was the initals for someone, but I can't remember who.

Actually, Columbia was originally supposed to be an all UHF TV market. Channels 25, 31, and 67 were to have been the channels. Channel 10 was allocated to the upstate. Yes, Charleston got 2, 4, 5, but I would think Mendel rivers would not have been so happy with that, since he put the original channel 5 on the air in 1953. The fact that he eventually had two VHF competitors in what then was a very small market could not have made him too happy. OTOH, none other than Strom Thurmond was responsible for channel 10 going to Columbia. WCOS(25) and WNOK(67) were already on the air and I think 31 was also spoken for. They objected to the FCC, but Ole Strom continued to support the 10 allocation. WIS got the CP, provided that they broadcast from a very small tower (the same one still located at their studio), so as not to overwhelm the two UHFs. After WIS came on, WCOS-TVs fate was sealed, they suspended operations in 1956, but did not turn in their license. Instead they lobbied the FCC to change their allocation to VHF channel 8 with WBTW moving to 13. WNOK, on the other hand lobbied, for WIS's allocation being changed to 31. Very quickly, WIS, got permission to build their tall tower in Kershaw, despite their original promise to limit their broadcast power. After that, WCOS gave up on 25 and sold the license to another company who returned 25 to the air as WCCA, which in turn was sold to Bahakel in 1964. He changed the calls to WO-LO. Thus, WOLO is actually the oldest TV station in SC. Still, throughout the 60s, filings continued on changing Cola back to an all UHF market, or changing WOLO to channel 8. Strom continued to step in to prevent that. WNOK changed to 19 in 1961. One interesting tidbit. Fritz Hollings was an early investor in WNOK-AM-TV. Also, WO-LO finally got its channel 8, at least for its digital channel. I learned all of this history while doing research for another project at the USC library during the 80s.

Nobody should be surprise about Clear Channel voicetracking WNOK-FM! They always voicetrack 95% of their stations anyway, except for the larger markets (New York, Los Angeles, etc.).

What Columbia really needs is a Hot Adult Contemporary station. I think 94.3FM Classic Country format will die in the next year and will have to change formats!

I saw that also, and it saddened me. (the topic at the start of this thread) Too many solid people out of work due to voicetracking.

hey Scott..if you see this..drop me a line.
