WNOW Changes

The news reports make it sound like WNOW-AM is going off the air. I'm surprised there haven't been any comments on the board about this. In fact a separate company programs the station from the company that owns WNOW-AM Davidson Media. I have no idea what they will do with the station. Maybe we'll hear it tomorrow....

I mention it because I remember when the station went on the air with a Contemporary Christian format. I got the chance to do some engineering out there.

Mike, do you have any links you can post regarding this? APE

Nope it was on TV this weekend. WBTV carried the story Saturday night on the 10pm WJZY cast.

No it wasn't simulcasting 105.3-FM. They had a different format and different programming. Also Davidson directly have being running NOW-FM for about 8 months now. My guess is that they will try to TBA NOW-AM. The rumor, and you can see the report also, the change was because Davidson wanted to increase the rent and LIDER didn't have the capital. That leaves Davidson and Norsan servicing the Hispanics in the Charlotte area.

It's a little misleading. The group that is programming the station is different from the group that owns the station. I assume the owners will just take over. I checked and 1030 WNOW was on the air Sunday but all I heard was music.

Mike, was it (is it) simulcasting 105.3?

I checked and they were not simulcasting. I know one of the folks at Davidson. They are looking for another broker.

Hey guys...

Channel 9 reported that Radio Lider was leaving the airwaves. I didn't recal if anything was said about the frequency 1030AM or not. I know for a fact that WLON-AM (1050) was looking to increase it's power to 10,000 watts but couldn't because it would push 1030AM out of the Charlotte area.....

The Hispanic market is an exploding, emerging market. Someone with a lot of money could cash in on its success.....

newsguync...

It has been brought up in this thread that the article in the paper and the stories on the news have been misleading...WNOW is not going off the air. The agreement between the company that was leasing the time from the owners of WNOW came to an end. A new agreement could not be reached. That means the programming provided by the company buying the time came to an end. That happened last Saturday at sign off time.

The station is still on the air with Spanish language programming. Not sure if the station owner, Davidson Media is programming the station or the time has been leased to another programmer.

At the risk of sending this thread off topic...I would think that first adjacent channel WXNC (1060 KHz) in Monroe would be more likely the reason for keeping WLON from increasing power.

I was listening to Poder 105.3 and heard the announcers talking about their "sister" station 1030-am. It seems that Davidson hasn't found anyone to rent the frequency, so they decided to run it themselves. They had a live show on the air this morning.

I'm happy that WAVO 1150 went to the Standards format. There signal is okay here.

If WNOW had gone Standards I would have been overjoyed! That station has a great signal!

I know a little about WNOW AM......I was involved with installation of the transmitter, directional system, and studios. We built it in 1986, Ed Lively was the consultant, and I did the biggest part of the NDA/DA measurements. This was a Vernon Baker station (Dr. Baker died July 11, 2009, will be buried tomorrow) I have worked with him since '86. He was a great guy to work for and will be missed greatly. We built a number of 1030's and 1040's in WV, Oh, and NC......WFTK in Butner, NC, WSGH in Lewisville, NC, WAMN in Bluefield WV, WBGS in Pt. Pleasant WV, and WBNN on the OH/IN line in Union City OH. They sold all the NC AM's around 2004, this included WCXN,in Clairemont, NC and WBXK in Ft. Mill, SC and WTIK in Durham.

Winston,

Thanks for letting us know about Dr. Baker. I enjoyed working for him, only saw him once or twice. You folks built up quite a business! I hear the old MW-10 that often gave us problems is no longer being used.

Mike:

Didn't mean to sound harsh on my last post. I'm sure I would remember you if I saw you....I probably destroyed those particular brain cells that would have remembered you.....Positive Radio sold all the AM stations to Davidson Media in 2004,
I believe. There are some 50 stations in the total group and about the same number of translators....and I'm still here!

Not at all, I was at WNOW from around 1989 till 1994 when I moved to Florida for a new job. I used to help Sam Robertson until he decided to devote his time to school.

I was there when the MW10 cooked itself. One of the phases that carried the A/C unit and the cooling fans went out. Man was it hot in there. I don't remember what was done to get it back on the air. I'm sure I had to call you since there were no spare parts on site.

Also used to see you at Hamfests.

Mike

Just when you think there are no more "move ins" left. I feel bad for the small cities around Charlotte who lose their radio stations.
