WNOW-FM format change?

I remember back several years ago they were Hot 92.7 (WCHH) or somethin like that....I think Power 98 needs some competition. Slow jamz on a Friday night at 10pm??? REALLY?! How boring and stale!! Power 98 is an awfully run Urban station and needs someone to shake things up...and they play Usher "OMg" 4x an hr.....oVERKILL!!! Or take some lessons from bigger sister V103 in ATL

Rumor mill states that Radio One is looking into WNOW-FM. Could this be true?

damn, lol I hope so its be another Hip Hop and R&B station running just like Hot 107.9 in ATL coming soon in Charlotte to give Power 98 run for the money again! ;D

Would another urban station really fly in this market. I know 96.1 The Beat really doesn't count, but between them, Power, 2 urban AC's and praise, it would seem that urban radio in Charlotte is saturated at the moment. Smooth Jazz would be nice, but that format is sinking everywhere. Perhaps R&B oldies, but on a 100k watt station? I still think Spanish is the way to go here.

First...WNOW-FM is listed at 51KW ERP. I was under the impression they would be 100KW from the WBTV tower. I guess that is not true. I also thought they had to change their City of License to move to Dallas...

The station is still listed as being owned by Gaffney Broadcasting. I was told that the Man and Wife that owned the station left instructions in their Will that the station not be sold. Stands to reason the Estate more than likely still owns this station leasing it to Davidson Media...

With that being said I know everybody from with enough wherewithall to buy the station has made an offer.

Radio One does not seem to be in a financial situation at this time to be making a purchase.

On the other hand Greater Media does have enough money to make a purchase. This would make the most sense. I could see them moving WBT to 105.3 and make 1110 a sportstalker...

I agree that if "Greater Media" is interested in a purchase of WNOW-FM, WBT moving from 1110 to 105.3 would be a great move, and taking 1110 AM and 99.3 FM toward Sports and get ESPN from WFNZ benefits listeners in Charlotte.

My hope is that never happens. I'm not that big on sports stations, that's just me.

1110 AM already has rights to the Carolina Panthers, i'm sure the Charlotte Bobcats would like to return to this frequency, and with the addition of a FM simulcast, would help the NBA Franchise, in addition, the "Queen City"
has a minor league team, the Knights, of the International League.
By the way, are they getting any coverage on WFNZ or on another station here?

Can't make it to a Knights game? Want to hear the team on the road? The Knights Network offers coverage of your Charlotte Knights.

ON THE RADIO
Listen to games over the air on WRHI AM-1340 and FM-94.3. WRHI will air over 125 Knights games during the 2010 season. Pre-game coverage starts 15 minutes prior to most games. (Pre-game show times will vary)

ON THE INTERNET
If you are out of the area and can't pick up our over the air signal you can listen to games online. Every game will be streamed live online through CharlotteKnights.com and our online partner CharlotteObserver.com.

WBT sports format...

Why would Greater Media replace a top-billing, #7 station in market with a lesser-billing, #20 station and format with the current 1110/99.3 combo for 105.3? If anything, they purchase 105.3 and that becomes the FM side of WBT with 99.3 being all sports. I can see that happening.

Well...There are a number of reasons why they might like to move the News/Talk format from AM to FM.

I love AM Radio but...it is dying. Man made noise has all but killed it. No young people listen to it. It is sadly becoming relegated to foreign language and religious programming.

In other markets legacy News/Talkers have made the move. WIBC in Indianapolis is a good example. They moved their talk programming to FM and made the AM Sports Talk. Seems to be working.

Charlotte has room for a Sports Talk station. WFNZ has some programming issues. It is good that they are local during the day but the morning and midday shows are weak. Afternoon show is ok but could stand some updating. WFNZ also has a nighttime signal issue.

1110/99.3 as a Sports Talk station would make room for a number for sports looking for a home. NASCAR for one would be a big money maker. CBS is leaving tons of money on the table.

I can't see the Bobcats moving however. I don't think they would be willing to pay what it would take to buy on. Duke or Davidson might be willing to pay to play.

99.3 would not able to make it as a stand along Charlotte station. They just don't have enough North side signal.

This is all speculation. I doubt 105.3 is for sale.

Chimpanzee, you know a graveyard AM from Rock Hill can't be heard in Charlotte at night. WRHI can't even be heard in Fort Mill at night! Besides, who needs antoher right wing talker in Charlotte?

Look at ratings on right-wing talkers around the country. See a trend? heheheehh

I think 105.3 becoming the FM side of WBT sounds good, and making 99.3 a Sports Station is not a bad idea, but they need to move 99.3's transmitter location closer to Charlotte if they want this to happen.

No way 99.3 can be moved. It was short spaced in from the beginning. It is doing the best it can do.

JP didn't intend for 99.3 to be anymore than a fill in station when 1110 switches to directional at night. It does ok in Gaston County and helps in York and Chester as well. It is really more or less a very high powered translator.

I wasn't referring to the format. What if a person wants to hear CHARLOTTE Knights games? If it's on the road they can't just go to the stadium. And at least some of the game takes place after dark even this time of year.

The WFNZ broadcast of all Charlotte Knight games is rebroadcast on channel 20 on Comporium Cable which serves most of York and Lancaster Counties.

Huh? WFNZ isn't listed as airing the games. It's the people in Charlotte who need a way to listen.

If I were Greater Media, I would buy 106.1 and put a sports format there, or put WBT on there. They have a better signal than WBT-FM now, and could be great for that format. You could make 99.3 the York County station, and run Fox Sports on there. You could also have Panther games on there, and either Clemson or South Carolina along with another state team.

Knights games could also air there. 106.1 and 1110 would be a good combination, with 106.1 providing a clearer signal in parts of Gastonia, plus in southern suburbs of Charlotte.

If only 97.3 was available, wasted with satellite AC and App State sports. I heard that signal very easily in Asheville and in most of the Charlotte area throughout my trip.
